Also the downside of strikeouts is you rarely get a (“strike ‘em out and throw ‘em out”) double play. Whereas a junkballer with high movement who couldn’t strike me out might get you out of an inning with a ground ball DP.

Two-way street there though.

There's also going to be times that the runner on 3rd scores because the junkballer allowed a 1-out ground out to SS as opposed to striking the guy out.

Groundballs are more democratic.

IIRC actual strikeouts in terms of their own value compared to other outs is basically a wash. You can't move a runner along with them but you can't double play into them either (usually). I think you get about 1 extra run per 100 Ks. Of course, as it applies to pitchers, strikeouts are the only kind of out most of them can influence heavily.

FWIW, the computer agreed with the poll's outcome:

An old hand in this game, Pedro Martinez of the Taiwan Explosive Go Salmon silenced critics as well as he silenced the opposition this year by winning the National League Cy Young Award.

The 36-year-old starter threw 211.1 innings, notched 230 strikeouts and put up a 16-9 record to claim the coveted award.

He received 24 first place votes out of a possible 28. Jacob deGrom of the Galveston Greyhounds finished second in voting with 4 first place votes, while Yu Darvish of the Kentucky Stallions finished third.

Player - Team - First Place - Total Points
Pedro Martinez - Taiwan Explosive Go Salmon - 24 - 184
Jacob deGrom - Galveston Greyhounds - 4 - 124
Yu Darvish - Kentucky Stallions - 0 - 57
Matt Harvey - Galveston Greyhounds - 0 - 57
Jim McCormick - Taiwan Explosive Go Salmon - 0 - 25
Brett Anderson - Taiwan Explosive Go Salmon - 0 - 24
Shohei Ohtani - San Juan Cyclones - 0 - 1
Anibal Sanchez - Curlville Pubies - 0 - 1

for that one year, i think i'd err toward the guy first guy.

if i was looking to sign either (ignoring age for a moment), i'd look at historical babip of 2nd guy... i'd expect better results over long-term with the 2nd guy if he has a normal babip against and this was actually bad luck.

i'd wager his numbers would have looked superior shaving 30pts or more off babip ag.

As much as I'd like to go with #2 who had more starts and pitched more innings, I really like #1's # of quality starts. I like to think to myself that the SP did his job if he got a QS and that it's largely up to the offense and relief after that. "If you can't win after giving up 3 or less runs, you probably didn't deserve to win". #1 had 27 QS while #2 had 24 QS.

That ERA+ is amazing too.
