It was a "masked" insult

If your “preference” is to not wear a mask in public and you’re acting on that preference, you’re a jack hole. I mean, my preference is to not wear masks when I don’t have to, of course, but I have a greater preference towards not catching coronavirus and, if I happen to have it, not transmitting it to others.

I get the desire to try and make games shorter at this point in time. If this rule is proposed during normal seasons than I'm highly opposed to it.

There's no guarantee that this bullhorn makes anything shorter. Small sample size, but in this game it gave everybody an extra challenge in the top 10th, and the Rays probably would have won it in the bottom 10th anyway.

From our earlier discussion, in this thread, on this topic

We have two years’ worth of data from the minors to work with, and per MiLB, the results are notable. Over the last two seasons, just 43 total games went more than three extra innings, compared to 345 in 2016 and ‘17 combined. And as Baseball America’s JJ Cooper notes, nearly three-quarters of all extra-innings minor league games last year and the year before ended in the 10th, as opposed to just under half in the two seasons prior. And nearly all of them — 93% — finished in the 10th or 11th, representing a 20% increase.
Again, the rule was designed to shorten extra inning games, and is doing exactly that.

Hard to argue the rule is dumb when it's obviously successful

We'd have fewer problems in the world if people didn't inflate the importance of their personal preferences.

I think the pandemic is just an excuse for rolling it out. It was being tested in the minors long before the pandemic was an issue, after all.

Hopefully they get enough backlash to put the kibosh on the idea.

I'd probably rather see 9, 10, 11 or 12 inning ties

But I think the rule is fine

Marlins had four players test positive and get scratched from their game today

Also changed their travel plans due to the results

I can sort of see where people are coming from on that... but for myself, one of the things that I have always loved about baseball is that when the game would end in a tie you just keep playing with the exact same rules until it's resolved. Deciding a game using different rules than normal has always seemed flat-out wrong to me, and is part of the reason I've never had much interest in other sports.

I'd be okay with ties. Set the inning limit to 13 or 14 innings (approximately another "half game") and call it a tie if no ends up with more runs by then. Ties have historical precedents in baseball. Runners on second do not.

I have forgotten, what were the numbers like on average length of extra inning games and average number of extra inning games per season? iirc, 80-85% end by the 12th inning.

I don't care for the new rule either though I am sure I'll get used to it. It just seems that of all the potential things MLB could try to improve, this wasn't an area where improvement was needed. Maybe it's just me but one of the best times to watch baseball is when it is close or tied in the ninth inning. Extra innings provide more of that excitement. Diminishing an exciting part of the game seems like a solution searching for a problem to me.

Yeah, this could be really bad. Looks like last night’s projected starter and their starting catcher may have been among those who tested positive (no names were released but the former was scratched and the latter placed on the DL).

The Braves’ first and second string catchers are also reported to have “coronavirus like symptoms”.

8 more Marlins and 2 coaches tested positive

Marlins vs Orioles tonight cancelled

Infected Marlins players were in contact with Phillies players, stadium staff, hotel staff, bus drivers, flight staff, etc...

Lots of complaints about Manfred recently. Manfred should have cancelled yesterday's game after a few players tested positive and they were waiting on the (delayed) results for the rest of the team

But you can't play baseball with only one team in any given ballpark.
