Favorite Years/Eras for Fictional

What are your favorite years or eras when you play fictional? What do you like about your choice?

i just make it so a rare player will surpass 60hr or get to 120+ sb etc... no worries about a particular era.. just want vaious records to be where i want them.. not even historically accurate in the case of HR. Definitely closer to modern totals but better BA. after similar years i get similar number of 3000+ hitters etc... 500hr club is small like RL etc etc. (rate of occurrence to compare apples to apples)

Custom gives me what i want to see out of individuals, which i am more interested in. Maybe a slightly elevated offensive environment results but nothing that destroys pitcher stats either... the high-end pitchers still hit expected modern-day marks. (compared to recent years, not even elevated)

tunnel vision on totals from any era often does not lead to individual results ppl want to see. (*another thread it might be closer than in past releases)

I like the deadball era, as it’s nominally the same rules but the actual game is a lot different. My current league is in 1970 now and by and large I like the expansion era as well. I guess the one thing I don’t like is the 10 team, no-division leagues from 1961 to 1968 - if there’s a boring pennant race in one league, the entire season becomes a bit meh to watch - but the overall mix of offense and defense from the 70s to the early 90s is fun and nostalgic for me. Can’t wait to get to the DH and free agency and of course the return of Major League Baseball in Seattle.

I also had some fun doing a 19th century league a couple versions ago. These are kind of a pain to maintain but it’s interesting to see baseball move from small towns and have those “hey, St. Louis is the Far West and it takes a few days to travel by train to get there” and “wow, teams in Buffalo and Indianapolis” types of moments (hell, Louisville had a team all the way to 1899) and I think that it’s by and large a “set it and forget it” league during the season at least.

Anything pre-1960 for me but ideally 1940-60. I want the occasional hitter challenging .400, a 50 homer season being a possibility and a 300-win career or two from my best pitchers.

Regardless of the year I choose I love the classic 16 team format with 2 8-team loops. Win and you play in the series. Second place means little and with 16 teams it is so much easier to get to know the players in my league than with a larger number.

I'm solidly in the 68-88 camp, less the DH.

I want speed, defense, and the occasional power hitter. I grew up in that era as well. One of my goals with OOTP is to manage the 84 Tigers to as good a record as they got in real life. I've taken them to a WS win, but never with over 100 wins. Ditto for 68.

Wouldn't give you a nickel for most of the 90's or the last 5 seasons. Home runs and strikeouts and diminished strategy...not my cup of tea. I want to lead the league in doubles and triples. I want 9 Gold Gloves. When I win a WS, I immediately quit and sign on with the worst team in the league.

However it turns out...I want to have fun. That's paramount.

For me that's the sweet spot of 2007-2016. Just getting out of the steroid era, things looking good and then it gets weird again.

What are your custom totals? Do you auto calc, if so, what year do you choose for the historical year?

This site is incredibly useful when trying to find a good starting point. For me, 1987 is nice because it has the HR of the mid 90's and the SB is highest of the 80's. K's are a tad low for my liking but i can bump up the modifier for that

I alternate between the late 70s/early 80s speed era and playing in 1993-era stats just before the steroid era really blew things up. Fun when RBIs still mattered and average did too. I like a steals-heavy league but where guys can also maybe strike out 300 batters in a year.

I use auto-calc after I pick the historical year and it keeps things level as my talent pool evolves.

1992 with +.1000 HRs and Ks and starter stamina set to 1.000. Auto-recalc on opening day each year.
