Best "real" name in baseball history?

Since playing historical games, Ive seen some pretty cool names that I never heard of before playing OOTP.

My favorite so far....
Sugar Cain, 1932-1935 Pitcher, Philadelphia A's.

Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy. C'mon, admit it...it sounds like someone James Bond would be be battling back in the Connery days.

Childish, I know, but Dick Pole always makes me giggle... And, as Syd mentioned, Rusty Kuntz.

I need to grow up...

Bob Blewett.

Why?

Well, in one of my historical replays, he pitched one year in the majors, 1902 btw, anyway in one of my replays the AI team he was on used him as their stopper.

And it always gave me a laugh when I'd look at a boxscore (course he didn't pitch much since in dead ball they didn't use relievers much) but in the boxscores whenever he had a blown save I'd always think, "yea, well, I guess Bob blew it."

I discovered Win Remmerswaal from a 1981 baseball card. He was a pitcher and he had 3.

One cool old baseball name, the kind you see once and can't ever forget - was shortstop Davy Force. He wasn't a hall of famer, but he was a notable player. One of only 8 players to debut in 1871 and have more than 1000 plate appearances in the 1880s. Joe Quest was another one of those players, he was a second baseman with pretty great name.

One of my favorite pitcher names from the dawn of the game was Tommy Bond. One of the early greats too, a borderline hall of fame. He was a sidearmer when the rules prevented overhand throwing. So he threw with the highest arm angle that was legally permitted, and he was one of the first if not the first power pitcher.

Of course, this is obvious but Randy Johnson. He was even nicknamed the Big Unit.

Wow, I've never noticed him before. I've spent 40 years in Baseball Encyclopedia and Baseball-Reference, it astonishes me when I learn about an interesting major leaguer who can't recall ever seeing before. For example I only learned of a player named Keefe Cato this year, despite owning the 1985 Topps baseball set for over 30 years. I was stunned when I saw a 1985 Topps card in 2021 that I had no recollection of seeing prior.

I've always had a soft spot for Hack Wilson. I love the nickname "Hack" for a batter. He was short, even for back then, and yet he was a power hitting CF. Apparently he had quite the personality too.

Another favourite is Biz Mackey. If I didn't know better I would guess he was a modern day rapper with that name. He was one of the best negro league catchers.

I've recently gotten into looking at the real names of players who are better known by their nicknames and there are some curious ones there. Like the HoF catcher/manager Mickey Cochrane whose real name was actually Gordon Stanley Cochrane. Not only how do you get Mickey from Gordon, but he was also nicknamed "Black Mike" and he looked pretty white.

Another was Honus Wagner. For some reason I thought the name Honus was just some regular first name from a bygone era, but it was actually short for Johannes.

And there's Max Carey with the arguably better birth name Maximillian Carnarius.

I thought for sure Eppa Rixey's first name must be a nickname, but nope. His nickname was Jephtha, which for me at least, probably takes the award for weirdest nickname.

I also like Burleigh Grimes. No nickname there, yet it just makes you think of some big old dirty pitcher.

Early Wynn is a great name for a pitcher too. Early was actually his real name, Gus was his nickname.

Eddie Stanky was a great name for a scrappy infielder/manager. His last name at birth was Stankiewicz of course.

Then there's the Jeff Pfeffer brothers where neither were actually born Jeff! "Big Jeff" (the older brother) was born Francis Xavier while the much better and younger Jeff was born Edward Joseph.

And, of course, no great baseball name list is complete without the indelible Yogi Berra. You can't get much better than that.
