Theme Teams - Show & Tell

Best decision I made this year was to make one of my teams a theme team, the theme being the 70s. Although it gives me a limited pool of players to pick from (and a lot of players are scarce on the AH too) I'm really enjoying it though I have learned a few things about the 70s players (I deem any card with the 70s design to be available, so SEs and Peak are included)

1) they are slow. the amount of speedsters seems much lower than other eras, my team is usually dead last in steals and baserunning.

2) contact wasn't great. Lots of players have sub 60 contact or far worse. th highest contact hitter on my team is Boog Powell (83)

3) they are not fond of walking, very few high Eye guys, combined with the low contact it makes OBP fairly low

4) the pitchers love a K, 4 of my 5 starters have 90+ stuff and the lowest is 85, most of the relievers have decent stuff ratings

And with that in mind i don't expect this team to push upper echelons but I do have room to improve the team, Billy Williams at Dh is the most obvious improvement, but guys like Darrell Evans, Merv Rettenmund. SE Ryan, Ron Guidry, Tom Seaver, Chet Lemon and Dusty Baker would be big upgrades when/if I get the PP to buy them (this team is F2P

Here's what I currently have, lets see your theme teams, your expectations and potential upgrades

Thanks for sharing... makes me want to start an era type theme as well. Kudos to you ~

I'm doing several theme teams. 90's team, Mets team, and just got the 80's team off the ground so that'll take time to fill with players.

Might show off the ones I have later, we'll see what happens.

Making a Rockies team this year - great offense, but getting screwed on the pitching/defense.

The best Rockies players are taking up 1B and outfield corners, so Giambi is at 2B.

Nothing above gold Marquez, Neagle, Hammel cards atm in the rotation, I don't think I'm missing anything Hopefully help is on the way at some point this year!

Probably asking for too much, but one of '07 Jeff Francis, '08 Aaron Cook, '13 Chacin or '18 Freeland cards would be great. Even a Peak Moyer card would be cool.

Alternatively, I might pick another team's pitching at some point if I give up with making the Rockies viable long term.

(Also, how did you create the cards overlap picture?)

I'm running without a theme this year to experience the full card variety and try to be competitive ... but these are fun to read and I might construct a theme toward the tail end of the OOTP21 cycle myself. Good luck and hope you pull a Reggie Jackson or Pete Rose!

In Perfect Team, click on your team name and click "Customise Team Design", in there click the "Advanced Settings" button in the bottom-right hand corner and then finally click "Create Team Picture"

Depending on your settings you'll get either faces or images of the card. If you want to change that, then click on Main and then "Perfect Team Settings". Under Facegen Settings and pick "No" for cards or "Yes" for faces. Picking "Yes" doesn't always guarantee a face, when I tried it I got 25 faces and one a Randy Johnson card.

I don't have a theme team myself but I sure do love the look of all those 1970's cards! It's hard for me to decide if the1970's design or the 1930's design is my favourite.

50s team, eventually added 60s [because there weren't enough C options.]

Warm Beers-- names containing "EZ" (Hernandez, Fernandez, Martinez, etc.), expanded to include "IA" (a lot of Garcias, Heredia, etc.)

Mississippi River Valley State (8 teams).

Defunct 20th century teams (Giants Expos Pilots etc)

Different degrees of limitation. Think the Cervezas are the least competitive.

Waffletown is once again an old timey club (basically cards around 1945 and earlier).... got a couple of those pasty-faced zombies in the mix (had to make my own facegen since one didn't seem to exist in the file):

Here is the current roster of my White Sox team. I'm sort of promoting each position in order of value.

The Mets, including pre-1958 Dodgers and Giants, and a few wildcards.

I wanted to focus first on getting the guys with Expos logos (even the Johnson was a lucky pull for the team). Looks like Peak Reardon has a Twins logo on his card, so he'll have to come once I build the bankroll back up, along with guys like Walker and (eventually) Pedro.

Understood. Saw you had Maury Wills there, hence why I asked. If you're giving yourself some leeway, you could also pick up Peak Willie Davis to give yourself a chance in CF (he played more games in MTL than Wills, and CF is not deep, just like SS).

My rule is anyone who played for the team is eligible. Wills I needed because the Expos other options at SS were... limited. There's lots more choice in the OF. Davis at some point might feature on the squad, but I basically blew the bulk of my points balance on Staub, so need to rebuild the bank balance a bit before I get the next set of upgrades.

If you ever get tired of Staub, you've got one Expos fan here...a poor, cheap bastard one however! (re-reading Up, up and away at the moment)

Good luck with that great-looking team !

My plan is as follows:

1- Play only Expos cards and see how far the team can go;
2- Add cards of guys that played at least one game in an Expos uniform and see how far the team can go;
3- Add cards of guys that played either with the Montreal Royals or Quebec Carnavals and see how far the team can go.

That last step should be interesting as it will give access to a bunch of great cards : Robinson, Clemente, Snyder, Drysdale, etc. Well, if I have enough points of course (so, most certainly not you SE Jackie Robinson).

I have 2 rolling right now...1 all Tigers team which I've had some pretty good pack luck with some of my early pulls in terms of players resell value. I also put in $100 for some extra PP and am about 90% complete there.

Also running a FTP 90s team which is coming around really slow. Have had no pack luck on that team.

Will try to get some pics of the rosters tonight.

An update to the team pic, we continue to build, at the minute my no1 priority is probably Staub, but we are at least 40k short of him, loved the fact that collecting 70s cards meant i was only a couple short of Rose at release, and he has replaced the much higher rated Darrell Evans and seems to play really well so far (hitting .300 at silver) catfish has been my no5 starter but he deserves to be no 2 or 3 probably, Montefusco and Lolich are fairly erratic
