I realize I'm not going to solve anything by jumping in here, but I suppose you're all aware that we have this exact same conversation EVERY year?

And guess what? I'm sure as this will come as a shock and surprise, but to date I have yet to see the version of this thread where Person A (the one who doesn't want to spend the money, for example), posts back in the thread as follows:

"Oh, hey, you know what? Now that you put it THAT way, you're RIGHT!"

We think it's a great game every year, and worth the money, and we'd be happy if you bought a copy every year! But, if you don't, we'd be happy if you buy it every two years, or three years even, whatever you think is worth it to you.

New game vs patches

So I've been around since OOTP3 or 4 or something and have read these same posts year in and year out...and I just have one question....are people actually suggesting that every other sports game that we buy is a completely new game every year? Hello???? Madden? NCAA? Every EA Sports Title? The friggin games haven't had more than 2-3 new features each year, and we seem to pay $50-$60 every year for "updated" rosters and some graphical updates. Seriously...what are you all complaining about??

The point of my post, anyway, wasn't necessarily to change ravinhood's mind but to get the opinion out for the benefit of those who might be lurking who semi-agree with his point but haven't really thought about it much. Anyway, IME revelations like this never work this way. I remember back in the day when I took my environmental science class in college I was kicking and screaming the whole way. Six months later, I realized that I basically agreed with all the conclusions of them radical scientists and now I'm a dirty hippie.

Did you, um, not realize that there would be another version of the game coming out the next spring the way the game has come out every spring over the last 9 years save one?

Did you ever stop or even pause to think maybe the guy was new to the game? Maybe he doesn't know that there is a new game in the spring of every year? Believe it or not new people find this game all the time, I for one didn't know it existed until version 7. I found it due to SI's involvement as I saw the link on their Football Manager site. Not everyone has been around as long as you.
Why does every thread on these Forum's have to be become petty arguments

The tone of the prior post was not "OMG NOOB U GAY". Really, it was more of a response to someone who had nothing better to do than complain. You have the right to complain, sure. Just don't get all put out of shape when others respond to your complaining. That being said, this is a baseball game. It tends to be released around the time that baseball season is under way. The only reason the last "version" was released so late was that SI had broken off with OOTP and Markus didn't want to have to continue to sell it through them. Which, of course, *you* knew about because you heard about the game from SI.

I'm sorry you feel that's a petty argument. For others, people complaining that they just bought a game last year why do they have to buy it again is a petty annoyance so I guess it all adds up in the end.

I'm thinking some people see OOTP8 and think, "oh, it's 2008, the baseball season just started, this must be their version of the game for this year, I'll go ahead and get it".

To withauthority I'd say: don't worry, you'll probably get plenty of play out of OOTP8 by the time that OOTP9 comes and maybe then you won't even see a need for OOTP9. Plenty of people skip versions and you did get OOTP8 at a reduced price so it's not that bad.

I'd much rather have version numbers like this than using years where you don't know if 2008 is this year's or last year's version. That drives me bonkers.

The year is what I figured confused some buyers. Glad someone said it I would have but didn't want Syd getting testy at me about it. Until I read that there was a new version coming out I thought that OOTP 2008 was going to be for the upcoming baseball season. Of course some people would say that I am ignorant for not knowing that there is a new version every year but I think intolerance is the biggest sign of ignorance.

Yeah. Try not to let anybody get to you. Some people are just having a bad day; some a bad lifetime. Whatever it is it shouldn't prevent you from speaking your mind. It's especially bad in my mind when it discourages newcomers from posting as fresh perspectives are often the best.

If it ever seems like it goes beyond the rules, report the post and one or more of the mods will take a look. I myself rarely participate, but it's a good group that often discusses things. Try not to make frivolous reports, though, as those can be even more trying.

But yeah, the main point is this place is intended on being a friendly place to talk about the community's interests, especially the game, and when some are put off from doing so then something probably needs to be corrected.

The way I see it is that, as with every version, there will be about 3 patches that will fix major and minor problems. The final patch will come out some time in the late summer. Buy getting v8 now you'll get a pretty stable version that can hold you over until late August when the newest version is as stable as its gonna get. Many people don't start their leagues until then.

Uhm.
OOTP is a bargain.
Think of gas prices.
Think of what you pay for cable every month.
Think of what it costs for two people to go see a movie and have popcorn and a soft drink.
Think (God forbid) of what it costs to go see a baseball game.
Think of the cost of a few beers and some snacks at a bar.
OOTP isn't a bargain with a new version a year?
D'oh.

I bought v8 last night. Glad I did it. I figure I won't get around to v9 until about the 2nd patch or so, but that's mainly my development status vs. purchase issue.

In the meantime, I'll enjoy v8 quite a bit until then.

This version no longer has the option to play with the Sports Interactive logo anywhere, or have it as a folder title.

I still plan on buying the game, however.
