This. It's why I don't mind seeing these threads every year. 300 of them would be welcome, in fact (although it might be a bit cluttered around here).

Question: When's the release date for OOTP 17?

Correct Answer: The date it's released on.

Say what you will about Maddenization but people do indeed expect sports games to come out yearly now.
Maybe my memory is failing, but I certainly don't remember it being anywhere close to being a disaster. Did it come out later than a lot of us would have hoped for? Sure (the middle of June is never a good release date for a baseball game), but I seem to remember that being a problem for a number of releases around that time. Was it not as good as what some of us may have liked? Maybe, but what release pleases everyone? Here's the 6.5 release thread if anyone cares to look back at it.

I look back on 6.5 pretty fondly myself. I can't remember if there were any features that I thought were awesome at the time, but I think the reason I look back fondly on it was because it was a long time before we got another major OOTP release that was so good. OOTP2006 (OOTP7) may have been necessary, but IIRC it was pretty bare bones. I think it wasn't until OOTP8 came out 2.5 years later that a lot of people made the switch and it might not have been until OOTP9 when it really felt like OOTP was fully back on track.

Or maybe you didn't mean that OOTP6.5 was itself bad, but that OOTP and/or the community took a hit for awhile and if that's the case then yeah, I could only agree with that.

OOTP6.5 was great. I know that a lot of people saw it as the high water mark for the game for a few years after that. The fact that Markus went 2 years plus without a full new version of the game while he rewrote the engine from the ground up created an awful lot of animosity and almost certainly lost him some buyers at the very time he needed his sales to go up and not down (this also coincided with OOTP being distributed by SI for a couple of seasons - SI, being a bigger company, may have been able to marshal more resources for OOTP in time, but was also much more concerned about the bottom line than a small shop necessarily has to be).

As I recall 2006 was a kind of a letdown. May have been the worst version if I recall correctly. But to be fair the long wait may have given us too much to expect. In a way it was like the first version since ootp had i believe gone to a new codebase. But boy was it worth it. By 2008 the game was back were it had left off with 6.5.

I was impressed with version 2 to buy ootp for the 1st time. Can you imagine discovering ootp for the first time with ootp 17? That's why I can't blame people getting excited about the release date.

I found it with OOTP7 and was floored. Hooked since.

This is an annual tradition, though in recent years it hasn't been enough to raise Malleus Dei/Khaos from the dead.

Hope nothing. This place could do with a bit of old-school resuscitation, and an MD visitation would fit the bill nicely.

I've got my trusty Ouija Board out. I let you guys know if I hear any floorboards creek in the next room.

All a part of OOTPD's commitment to a realistic simulation of the game of baseball - this is basically our hot stove/trade deadline tradition.

Over the last 3 or 4 versions the game has really transformed and we have got some great new features and bug fixes that these larger companies would overlook, and in my book is well worth purchasing this series each year

Agreed! The last several years the game has really blossomed and the new features have been great! It will be great to see what the 2017 version has to offer us!

those anxious for the announcement of pre-orders can always use a child's question to "are we there yet?"

Is it pre-order day yet?
