Why? Did you feel the need to call the Miami Marlins the Florida Marlins when they changed their name too?

Maybe my non-programmer mind underestimates the difficulty of such a task, but eriqjaffe posted a suggestion on how to implement this from several years back which made a lot of sense, to me at least

Sort of. It looks to me like jaffe’s design implies the existence of a name/number layer to future meshes, which I’m sure could work but right now the game takes in flat pictures to create uniforms and you would have to redesign that to use Photoshop style files instead or in addition to the flat ones. The default jerseys work because the game looks for straight magenta, cyan, etc. and replaces that with the team colors.

Alternatively the uniform names and numbers could just appear over the exact same spot, with an option to put a number… somewhere on the front. I’m not actually sure this would work at all for front numbers but it could get you most of the way there.

There’s also the issue with what color to use for the uniform numbers and names, what font to use, how to handle longer player names, and so on.

I call both of the teams who play out of Chicago the White Stockings because that is called tradition.
