IRL in 1971, Bowa .249/.293/.292, 11 E's, .987 FA, 5.31 RF, 97 DP.
IRL in 1971, Jackson .258/.302/.324, but played CF.

It seems the AI always goes with offense over defense, but Jackson's O is only marginally better than Bowa's. While Bowa's D at a critical position would be far more valuable to the team.

As ST 1972 winds down, Bowa is the starter, but Jackson remains on the roster.....

July 20th, 1975 we have a pretty big trade between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the California Angels. The Angels acquire Don Sutton from the Dodgers in exchange for 24 year old LF Bruce Bochte, 19 year old C Butch Wynegar, 19 year old CF Larry Rush and 23 year old LF John Doherty.

The Angels trail the Oakland A's by 4 games in the AL West. This trade gives them a rather impressive rotation of Andy Messersmith(8-7, 2.58), Nolan Ryan(11-6, 3.33), Don Sutton(8-8, 3.45), Frank Tanana(12-3, 3.03) and Andy Hassler(11-2, 3.26) I guess the question now is whether the Angels can overcome their gas can of a Closer Tom Murphy.

Closing in on the end of July and Rollie Fingers already has 33 saves on the season. The MLB record for saves is currently 35, so Fingers should shatter that mark and then some.

Hank Aaron managed to hit another home run and now has 708.

Roberto Clemente pinch hit for the last 2 seasons, but with the introduction of high fatigue, Roberto has been getting regular starts again and he's having a great season. He's hitting .300+ and has 7 or 8 home runs

I'm still scratching my head over the Dodgers trading away Don Sutton. It almost has the feel of a team throwing in the towel and giving up. There is no amateur draft in this league, so tanking is useless. The Dodgers lost Tommy John to a career ending injury earlier in 75 and their cupboard of pitching prospects is rather bare. With Sutton's departure, the always a slight breeze away from the injured list Bill Singer takes over as the teams #1 starter. Singer is a good pitcher, but has to stay off the injured list to be of any value. Rick Rhoden is having a nice season so far in 75 and Doug Rau is holding his own. Al Downing is on the downside of his career and I really don't expect too much out of him. The Dodger's 5th starter is currently a "neverplayed' or if he did play, it wasn't for very long. Looks like they will have to wait till 1977 for Mr. Welch to arrive.

I so can't wait for free agency to kick in. The combo of no draft and reserve rosters is a way I will probably never use again.

That's a puzzler. They're likely to get several solid-but-unspectacular seasons out of Wynegar, perhaps conflicting with the arrival of Mike Scioscia. Bochte should have some solid seasons left, but as I recall, the Dodgers have a pretty solid OF. Doherty and Rush are ham sandwiches... Sutton, OTOH, should have 10-12 years left of being a high-level starting pitcher... Not a good trade, IMO.

Yeah, this is what I see in general:

1. The AI seriously downplays defense, to the point of playing players out of position if it doesn’t like the stick of a given defender.

2. The game engine does not and as such these teams that do this wind up with very bad defenses (as they should) that probably cost them on the order of 2-3 wins a year.

I’ve said before in here that this applies to fictional leagues as well although of course you don’t have the “Dan Meyer shouldn’t play shortstop” type baggage attached. FWIW I think there are situations where making moves like this makes sense - if your top shortstop options are just plain horrific for instance (the 1968 Tigers come to mind) or if you’re out of contention and, while not quite tanking, want to get young bats in the lineup so you can see who sticks and who doesn’t. The game does, by the 60s and 70s, allow you to do that without those guys carrying fielding averages under .900. It still feels like an AI issue much more than a game engine issue.

It will be interesting to see if the introduction of Wynegar to the Dodgers system, finally spells the end for Dick Dietz.

Hey David, I know that you moved on to other sims, but I'm just curious where you left off in this one? How far have you gotten?

I'm past the midway point of 1976 season. Keep meaning to go back and play some more games, but I've been locked into this random debut as of late.

Did free agency begin after the 1975 season?
