Teams still are releasing first round selections huh?

Just had the first year player draft for my 8 team fictional league and noticed this Look at first round selection, then look at the bottom line

Maybe there is something screwy with my setup. Three levels of minors AAA, AA, A and college feeder league.

Either way, not very encouraging

This is not encouraging

Perhaps OOTP needs to implement a rule, similar to the trade rules, by which teams cannot release recent draft picks until a certain period of time has passed after the draft? Not sure if this would be too afield from real life, but I agree something should be done about this.

Edit: Thanks Silvam for pointing this out!

Then the first round pick gets signed by a rival team a few days later...

BTW, this is also a new OOTP11 league, not a carryover from OOTP10

The weird thing, is that the very last draft pick was also a catcher and he is currently on the roster

Just submitted it. Looks like I'm going to need to start my league over

If you have any roster limits in the low minors, remove them. The AI doesn't handle those well. It also doesn't handle a shallow minor league system all that well, so you might find you see better results if you add a Rookie level to your minors.

On a related note I expanded my league recently and during the expansion draft several CPU run teams failed to protect their #1 overall picks from the most recent draft and the new expansion teams drafted them. Those #1 picks were 5 star prospects with tremendous ratings (I have scouts off) so maybe the CPU logic for protecting players in the expansion draft needs a little bit of work.

One good thing I will say about the expansion draft is that I left several very good but older and HIGHLY paid veterans unprotected and the CPU was smart enough to ignore them. I was kind of hoping to unload the old timers and their salaries! HA!

What are the players in question like? I wonder if the lower round players are actually better for some reason.

This bug has been in OOTP for years.

We'll probably get the usual "The game plays the way it's intended to play" reply from Markus.

It's the classic reply when he can't fix a bug.

I've done two MLB quickstarts in 11. Both times the Nationals waived Bryce Harper within weeks after signing him (to a 10m+ signing bonus and ML contract), and each time he's been claimed by a rival team immediately and not pulled back. Silly.

He's improved it quite a bit over the years.. it's not perfect yet, but this "bug" has gotten smaller.

I do hope he looks at it though.

I noticed this issue in my long-standing solo league for years. I wanted to offer a solution on how I've managed to fix it, but I forget. I know expanding from one level of minors to three helped, so has using ghost players and keeping the draft small enough that the game doesn't generate thousands of players who sit in FA and never play.

I think the reason this happens is due to lack of roster space where the player would go, because the AI doesn't know to release someone to put the draft pick on a minor league team. So if you always have space in the minors, then players won't be spontaneously released post-draft.

If he's being removed from the 40-man roster, those waivers are irrevocable.

I play two leagues, both with three levels of minors, no roster limits and with ghost players allowed, and I have not seen this happen in either one.

I see it a lot. I had one prospect, huge potential, first over all pick, great work ethic etc.
He was signed and released by FOUR different organizations within the span of two months.
Makes no sense...

I do the same thing except for the Ghost players part so I think I will enable that and see if it helps. There is no real downside to ghost players since I assume the game will still keep a fairly stocked minor leagues if players are available.

Also I do want to reduce the size of the FA pool. I see no reason to have 700+ players sitting in FA every season especially since 99% of them will never get signed.

IMO this is huge - HUGE. A game-breaking bug each and every time it happens.
