It's important to note that there are a number of in-game factors that affect how fast the game sims:
1. How many leagues/teams do you have?
2. What are the stats level for each league?
3. Are you generating HTML or CSV exports on a regular basis?

The first two of these greatly impact the sim speed and the amount of memory required to run it. You can run a very basic league with low stats level rather comfortably on a fairly out of date machine. If you want to model all colleges feeding into MLB with full 5-tier minors, Japanese leagues, and more all on very high stats detail, you'll need a much beefier machine.

My 512mb RAM runs OOTP functionally, but not too well (it sims decently fast, but there are random long pauses where it just "hangs" there)

I've recently purchased another 512mb, which will be shipped soon. How much of a difference will doubling my RAM do for me in this case.
I just installed another 512 MB myself. Best purchase I've made in quite a while. It has made a huge difference in performance for OOTP.

My lesser PC did not have any problem running 2006. Is the higher specs for those who convert to Vista? (I hope).
Your lesser PC will have even better performance with 2007

Just please always remember - the performance of OOTP is DIRECTLY (and probably exponentially, I dunno about that math stuff) related to how complicated your league is. If your PC has the minimum specs or below, don't expect it to be snappy when you create a baseball world with 50 leagues and 1000 teams, and try to sim for 100 years.

Somebody probably ought to modify that webpage a little, to add the minimum specs and emphasize that those listed are the recommended ones.

If it'll work on a 500Mhz with 128Megs RAM, there probably is no realistic minimum.

Yes, but when we see one set of specs we tend to think, "Ah, minimums," hence the question that started this thread.

Later, as the game gets more fine-tuning, I hope to add some Mac and PC examples about the performance you can expect from certain league setups, in terms of sim time and disk space requirements.

The ones you mention is the recommended Vista spec. XP runs well with a slower processor and 512 MB of RAM.

Well, no one should be running Vista until next Christmas anyway....

Windows 3.1 was the best, as far as I'm concerned....

I'm with you on this. I'm from the "don't fix what ain't broke" school of I.T. (also works with plumbing). I usually have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the next operating system level. I only have Windows XP because that's what was on the PC when I bought it, otherwise I'd still be ME so to speak. Vista, shmista as somebody said here recently.

Hey, only my daughter thinks I'm old, and I still run Win 2K.
And I'm not a curmudgeon either....

As of tonight, after a memory upgrade, my computer now brings 2GB RAM to the show. Along with its P4 2.80GHz processor, it is feeling pumped up, like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. "Ahnold," as he now refers to himself, commands me to tell you that he is ready for your puny, girlie-man program. "Bring it onn," he says. Ahnold also says to tell you, "Milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer."

Is FaceGen slowing things down much or is not really having much effect at all?

It's slow if you set it to generate 8000 pics at once, which I just did. You go make dinner, eat, clean up, and it is waiting on you when you come back.
