Are you going to pull a Linda Cohn and call the A's the "Kansas City Royals West"?

The A's need a new manager, and former Giants skipper Dusty Baker says he'd "be interested."

Actually his biggest problem was that he wouldn't allow the owner to yell at the Umpires because he didn't want his team to do it either.

Dusty Baker is sexually attracted to the Oakland A's?

Speaking of Macha, wasn't his style close to that of Torre, kinda laid back? Similar situations, but Torre returns and Macha does not. Cashman went to bat and Beane used it, I guess. 4 WS wins helps, no doubt. |

I like how nobody reads the article I linked and just assumes Macha was fired because the A's haven't reached the World Series. |

Hmmm. Torre vs. Rodriguez was a factor, though. But yes, the big deal with Torre was Steinbrenner stamping his feet (as much as you can at 76) over not winning the series in 6 whole years. The very idea! Torre did not deserve what he went through. I'm hoping that Macha did, for other reasons.

Well, now that you mention it, it is pretty disgraceful in our corner of the country, that way. I sometimes get embarrassed by it; for gosh sakes, how would you like to live in KC and be a baseball fan there (no disrespect meant). Or Detroit, which is whooping it up right now because they have not won the WS since 1984. Or Atlanta, winning the division even more than the Yankees have and only 1 WS. You don't hear the kind of nonsense in those cities that you do in NY without a championship for a couple of years. Believe me, not all Yankees fans are like this, just the johnny-come-latelies who hopped on the boat in the late 90's. The media is just giving them what they want to hear.

I'm speaking in generalities here, so I'm not necessarily talking about you personally or any specific member of this board. I was wondering if the NY media/NY (Yankee) fan thing is one of those chicken and the egg arguments. Is the media that way because the people want them to be or do the people expect it because that's just how the NY media is? New Yorkers have that reputation for being tough, and sometimes just rude. It's an interesting question. Once that's decided, it's then reasonable to ask if the NY media is crossing the line and no longer doing their jobs with some of the tactics they use to sell papers.

Meanwhile, many of these so-called fans were not fans before 1996, were spoiled by 4 world championships in five years and have been taught that whining about no championships in six years is normal, appropriate, and their right to do. They miss the quick, cheap thrill of a world championship without realizing that it can take years, if not decades, to build a great team AND be lucky enough to win the championship. It's pathetic, and I sometimes regret being a Yankee fan, not because of the Yankee part but because of the fan part. However, I will not give up my Yankees. I have been with them since 1965, and I have studied their history from before then. I saw the lean years leading up to 1976 and again from 1981 through 1995. I have seen six world champion Yankees teams in my lifetime, which is five more than any living Red Sox or White Sox fan, and six more than any Cubs fan. If I die tomorrow, I will consider myself blessed in this regard, a happy baseball fan. So, you see, be careful about Yankee fan generalizations.

I think I was careful by not singling out you or anybody in particular. I don't live in New York, but my perception is that this 1996-present fan is more numerous (or more easily seen/heard) than a person like you. Is that true?

Macha not a true believer
Probably the funniest article written after the Ken Macha fallout:

Just like the A's, Ozzy doesn't know how to do the little things anymore. When was the last time you saw Ozzy lay down a sacrifice bunt and give himself up for the team? Not recently enough, if you ask me.
