Macha fired by the A's
This is in the A's offseason thread but I thought it deserved it's own. A's fans now have something to celebrate despite being bounced from the playoffs two days ago.

Unfortunately for the A's, Art Howe will be coaching in Philadelphia, so his return won't happen.

Is Washington really field manager material though? All I have ever heard about him is he's great at teaching defense.

Well, he's going to be gone if they don't hire him as manager. San Diego and Texas have already asked permission to interview him. Granted, that's not reason enough to hire him, but I think he should have gotten the job last year anyways.

Didn't Beane move Howe out to bring in Macha? Why did he fall out of favor?

- He does not communicate well with the players - He's somewhat of an a-hole to injured players and bench players - His association with the front office and player developent "wasn't up to par" Speculation could also include that someone had to take the fall for Beane's frustration of not making it to the World Series, and that Beane might be ready to promote his best buddy, bench coach Bob Geren. |

This is what Macha was doing while Jim Leyland was busy managing a playoff series:

Why do you hate ice cream? And, quite obviously, America?

Supposedly Girardi's big problem in Florida was that he wanted to get more involved in general management than they wanted him to. I can't imagine he'd do better with Billy Beane already there in Oakland.

And they didn't want to risk losing Macha who i think was starting to get inquiries from other teams. And Beane wanted more of the credit for the team doing well. (But i suspect that was thrown out by the anti-Moneyballers.) Last edited by Dark Horse; 10-17-2006 at 06:21 PM. |

And I hope they're doing the same thing here with Ron Washington, who was scheduled to be interviewed by the Texas Rangers today. Everyone hearts Wash. |

Er, no. Girardi is a Showalter-esque control freak by most accounts, not exactly a good fit for a GM as meddling as Beane. It'll be either Bob Geren or Ron Washington, and Geren will get a shot eventually if he doesn't now.
