Update: Think I have it figured out.

I closed Steam entirely, then ran ./ootp15.sh and it popped up an "installing game data" screen. Now the game runs fine within Steam.

Actually I found a workaround. I downloaded the lahman 5.6 database and installed it in my home directory then used that instead. All the errors vanish that way.
