Seems like he could be a steal. But they haven't been importing Cuban hitters en masse to the majors have they? It's mostly been pitchers..I think that he's young and that makes a huge difference and everyone has long been big on these hitters.
I figured if Japanese hitters can do well in the majors, a young Cuban could be a pretty good player. I'd say he'll be a good fielder and a potential 30/30 player.

30 stolen bases might be a stretch considering he stole only 2 in two seasons in the Cuban professional league (146 total games). His power potential is off the charts, though.
What has me excited is in those two seasons he walked a total of 80 times while striking out only 81 times. Granted that's the Cuban league, but it's still pretty impressive. He had a total of 70 extra base hits in that time, as well. This is all according to The Baseball Cube. Rancho Cucamonga is on TV here in the LA area tonight. Looking forward to seeing not only Morales, but also Howie Kendrick and Brandon Wood. Rich Thompson's on the mound so it should be a pretty good look into the Angels not too distant future. I'm more excited about that game than the freeway series. |

I became a huge Brandon Wood fan last weekend, watching him hit 2 home runs in San Jose. I'm an A's fan, so it's a little weird that I think I will be pulling for this guy. Everyone says his defense is sharp, but I was less impressed with that in the game I saw. Certainly not something that can't be improved upon, and it was only one game.
Is Thompson supposed to be something? He didn't make the Top 30 for the Angels in the BA Prospect Handbook, and nothing stuck out to me, as he started that game last Sunday. He didn't give up much in the way of runs or hard hit balls, but he threw 10-12 58-footers. |

Morales hit a HR in his first professional at bat. Time for AA.
Wood is on the fast track. I only hope it's with the Angels. I haven't seen him a lot, but he's made two "web gems" already tonight (only the 4th inning). Thompson was a reliever last year. They're starting him this year. I don't know if he'll ever be anything special but he's got great stuff. I think his future is likely as a right handed set-up guy, but who knows? |
