The Nationals secret weapon

He checked his watch for probably the 15th time. He could not believe he was going to be late his first day to the office. He raced up the stairs and burst out of door leading to the office of the GM and team VP. The door was bare inches from decapitating a cleaning lady who was working early that morning. He turned and yelled a quick 'excuse me' in a heavy German accent. The poor cleaning lady gave a quick hail mary thankful to be alive, and went back to her work.

He burst into the GMs office out of breath. The GM was behind his desk shuffling through some papers. He looked up when his door almost exploded off its hinges.
'Ahh Mr. Dietrich better late than never'

Rudel Dietrich, the assistant GM of the new Washington Nationals murmed his reply
'Sorry traffic was horrible'

The GM quickly forgot the matter
'I hope you are becoming accustomed to your new job...but lets cut right to the point. I like you, I always have'

Rudel: 'I have been working here for 2 months....'

GM: 'Bahh...no matter. I trust you. You have a good baseball mind, and a sense of history about you' He lowered his voice 'I can trust you...these others? Bah...mindless yes men who are here for a paycheck and not to see the franchise excell. But you...your different.'

Rudel: Stammering 'Umm..yes sir. Thank you sir.'

GM: 'Let me ask you something. Something that must never ever leave this room until the time is right. Something that will change this organization and baseball forever.'

Rudel: Thinking to himself, Oh god...he is going to ask me to commit white collar crime...in a few months I will be upstate pressing licensce plates.

GM: 'How do you feel about cloning?'

Rudel: Taken aback 'Umm...to be honest sir...I have not given it much thought'

GM: 'What if I told you the move from Montreal, the cheap spending...the losing. What if I told you it was all planned?'

Rudel: 'Umm...I am not sure I follow'

GM: 'For the last 25 years, this organization has been secertly funnling money into project OC'

Rudel: 'I would be suprised, but I don't see how the Nationals have to do with a hit teen drama on the Fox network...'

GM: Sighing 'No dumbass...here...let me just show you'

He puches a button on his desk and the wall rotate and a stairway appears.
'Follow me'

They descend down several flights of stairs well below ground. Red lights are the only light on the walls as they descend. The whole way down the young assistant GM cannot believe what he has gotten himself into.
Cloning, project OC? What did it all mean? And what in the hell does it have to do with baseball?

They enter another coridor and then the GM slides a keycard into a reader and the door slides open.
Beyond the entry way a fullsize mock up of RFK stadium sits.

On the field are a group of men in labcoats. Rudel recognizes some of the teams scouts. He also notices several poles with sensors attached all pointed towards a batting cage near homeplate.
He hears the sharp crack of the bat and sees baseball being crushed to all parts of the field.

The GM talks to once of the scientists.
'How are things going?'

White headed man in labcoat: 'We are worked out the last of the kinks *CRACK* He should be ready for open-*CRACK*-ing day.

GM: 'Excellent' He motions towards Rudel. This is the boy I have told you about. So far he is one of the few in the know.

Rudel: 'Well to be honest...I don't really know much of anything'

GM: 'Lets change that'

They walk over to the batting cage. Inside with his back turned in a man in a Nationals spring training uniform. His back is broad and looks immensly power. His legs are short and he is slightly bow legged. His arms and neck are rippling with muscles beneath his dark skin.
He is carrying a 48 oz bat and with it is ripping baseballs to every part of the field while every aspect of his swing is monitored.
Rudel is very impressed.

GM: I want you to meet what we have been working on for the last 20 years. And I want you to meet the man who is going to win us the world series.

The man inside the cage turns and Oscar Charleston extends his hand.

Needless to say, this is my new attempt at a solo dynasty.
I have never been succesful with one. But I think this is one I can stick with.

Here is the premise. I am using the excellent All in 1 2005 MLB pack.
I will be taking over GM duties for the Washington Nationals.
Everything is set to default except for one big thing.
I will be creating Oscar Charleston and adding him to my team.

The idea is the that the Expos franchise over the last quarter century has been working with cloning technology and has created a player to help them win it all.

My idea is to let a new team discover the technology every three seasons. At this point I will add in a new player to this team.

Every cloned player will start out at 20 years old and play the duration of his carrer with the team he played for in real life.
The order of who I give cloned players too will differ. Probably just go on a whim.

The basic format will be me GMing the Nationals and I will give monthly update.
I am a terrible writer, but I really like this idea and I plan on sticking with it.

Hopefully all of you will give me feedback and ideas on how to make this better.
I hope you enjoy it.
I will be adding in new info over the next few days and I will hopefully start simming this coming weekend.

I hope everyone enjoys.

I love the premise of this dynasty. My only suggestion is to make sure to add a few pitching clones too.

Well I have a little time. So let me explain the creation of Charleston and lay out his ratings.

Charleston is my favourite player ever in baseball and the greatest player to ever have played the game. So needless to say he is going to be the best player in the league.

Chaleston was a CF who could play the other OF spots and played 1B later in his carrer.
He was a left handed batter and threw with his left as well.
His birthday is Oct. 14th and will have the same birthdate in my league.
He was 6'0" tall and weighed 190 lbs.

Anyways, lets move to his ratings.

In CF he was compared to Tris Speaker. I think his range would translate out to a 10.
His ratings at the other two OF spots were probably excellent as well. I will make them both 8.
He played 1B later in his carrer and his legs got bad. As a younger player I assume he would of made an excellent 1B. I will make him an 8 there as well.
His arm was considered good but not the best in the league. I think an 85 rating seems fair.

As a hitter he was compared to Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth. His stats seem to back that up.
He hit .400 several seasons and hit .326 against major league competition and .361 in Cuban winter league action.
I am going to rate him a 110 in contact hitting. I may adust this if his average is just insane.
Power wise he was excellent as well. Hard to get a good read since Negro league seasons were short and incosistent.
I think a 80 power rating seems fair.
He also had excellent double and triples power. I am going to give him a 90 here.
Eye rating is extremly hard to predict since Negro league players did not take that many walks. Charleston is said to have had a good eye for the strike zone. I will give him a 80 here as well and a 80 in avoid K's

He was an excellent basestealer and for his posistion and size was one of the best. I will give him an 8 in both stealing and speed.

In short a total 5 tool player. He is 20 years old and fully developed. His development I will allow to take a natural course with no editing from me.
Every 'cloned' player will be treated in this manner.

He is going to be signed to the Nationals for 6 million for one year to start out. Every cloned player will always play for the team they did in real life. I will edit contracts if I have too to ensure this.

i love the non-texas league history, too, so i'll be watching this one with interest. do you plan on using the "technology" on all players of the past or only non-mlb ones like charleston? the latter could be really damn cool. saduharu oh, bullet joe rogan, hector espino. hell, it is tempting me...but i couldn't work it into my dynasty.

but you can! so, uh, whaddya say?

I am going to go with the best player for that franchise. I will probably put it up for vote.

i.e.
I will let the forum members select between Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle Dimaggio etc. for the Yankees clone.

Teams like the Devil Rays and Marlins, who have no history, will get Negro league players.

Braves are playing a ****ty game, so I will come in here and do this.

It is five weeks after the shock has seen in of meeting Charleston. The story broke quickly after that and captivated not only the nation but the world. ESPN coverage was 24 hours a day for the past five weeks. Baseball and Congress both tried to bar Charleston from ever playing a game. The Nationals organization fought the bans and won them all.
It is now March 31st and Spring training is winding down. Nationals ticket sales, which were high before are now through the roof.
Rudel is again walking in through the halls of the front office to see the GM.
He enters his office.

GM: 'Dietrich!' He yells this as he covers the phone he is holding with the other hand. 'I want to you to meet with the scouts and draw me up roster report. Have it on my desk by Monday morning'.

Rudel: 'Yes si..' But the GM is already back on the phone. Rudel turns and walks out back to his office to start on that report.

Washington Nationals 2005 Roster report

Catcher:
Brian Schneider. He will work for a while. Good hitter and good glove.

1B:
Here we have Nick Johnson. Good bat and excellent eye. He would be good at the top of the order if it wasn't for the fact that he runs like he has stage 3 MS. His backups are players who play other posistions and will be covered elsewhere.

2B:
Jose Vidro. Good contact hitter and slightly above average everywhere else. Good range, but the 60+ year old Joe Morgan probably has a better arm. Is also not much of a threat to steal. He will work for now.

3B:
Vinny Castilla. Blech...
Will need a walker to get down to first by the end of the season. Good bat but did I mention he is on AARP? Slow as well since he is old.
Good defense...but god he is old...

SS:
Carlos Guzman. Good contact and good gap power. Has no power and has no plate patience. Excellent speed but being the asshat that he is, does not know when to steal. His brilliant defense and strong arm will mean that I spare him for a while.

LF:
I will start Brad Wilkerson here. He has a solid bat and is good in the field. Will also steal a few bases. Good solid everyday player.

CF:
Oscar Charleston. HOF player and the best player in the league. No more is needed.

RF:
Having Charleston will mean that I can start Tremmel Sledge here.
Besides have a name that is cool as hell. He is an excellent player. Excellent bat, good base stealing and good fielding.
My kind of guy.

Rest of the team:
Crap, crap and more crap. I have a ton of outfielders. I will exchange some of these for IF players since I have no backups there.

SP:
Ugh...
Losers to a man. I don't even want to talk about this. I will be getting rid of these losers soon enough.

MR:
Some decent arms. They will suffice for now.

CL:
John Patterson. Better pitcher and a thinner head than Horgan.

Farm system:
We have some good talent down here. I will not spend the time going over everyone, but for the most part I am happy here.

So basicly I have a team that is not my usual style of team. But through trades and lots of verbal harassment I will try and mold me a team I like.
I need better pitching. I need a catcher who is better than a division III college player. I need more base stealing.

I expect to maybe fight for 4th or maybe 3rd place in the NL East.

Next up I will discuss my lineup.

EDIT: I had to redo some of this. I dredged through my minors and found some gems that needed to be on my starting 25.

fallsy,

nice write-up! what the hell, you're putting the rest of us fools in this forum to shame with lines like:
Quote:
I will look to upgrade here ASAP. These two asshats are just adding weight to the team plane.
Quote:
He would be good at the top of the order if it wasn't for the fact that he runs like he has stage 3 MS.
Quote:

Good defense...but god he is old...
Quote:
Joe Horgan. Besides having a massive head flanked by wings for ears. He will work for the moment.
brilliance, my german friend, utter brilliance. you will have my ire for quite some time if you give up on these sad sacks!

just one question. what the hell roster set are you using? i haven't heard of half of these guys! though, perhaps that's what you're going for...

Halofans roster set...
No offense at all to Halofan, but overall I am very unimpressed. I really dont agree with alot of these ratings.
But whatever, this is more of a chance for me to see how HOF players stack up today.

Rudel quietly slips into the office of the GM.

GM: 'Power bats we need power bats!'

Rudel: 'Yes sir, I am not comfortable with Castilla in our 4th spot'

GM: 'And his bills for Centrum Silver are killing our bottom line' He tosses a stack of receipts at Rudel.

Rudel: Ducks as the stack sails past his head. 'Should we look for a replacement?'

GM: 'Of course, who is the best 3B in the league?'

Rudel: 'Umm...Well, Alex Rodriguez...Albert Pujols can play third...Adrian Beltre...Eric Chavez'

GM: 'Chavez!...Chavez is perfect...get him immediatly'

Rudel: 'That will umm...be sort of a problem...you see...we don't really have any players that like...you know...are any good...'

GM: 'The formula...trade them the formula!'

Rudel: 'To clone with?...won't that be giving them a HOF player?'

GM: 'Well yes, sort of...but you see...it took us 20 years...if they speed up the process, then there will be....problems...'

Rudel: 'Problems?'

GM: 'Yes...who knows what will happen...but that isn't our problem now is it?'

Rudel: 'No...I guess not...ok, tomorrow I will trade Castilla and the formula to the A's for Chavez'

GM: 'Perfect!' Rubs hands together 'Things are coming together for us'

So there you have it, I will trade Castilla to the A's for Chavez. In three seasons the A's will get a 'clone'.
Each clone I bring into the game will have a few...flaws...
Should be fun.
