Holy ****!

Is that the record for fastest manager firing ever? It has to be.

A real shame, too. Wally was a favorite of mine on the Mets in the 80s.

That sucks. They should've looked into things more before offering him the job, and saved themselves and Wally the embarrassment.

I wonder if they are still obligated to pay him for his full contract. If so, that's a pretty good deal for Wally.

He had not signed a contract with the team, so there were no financial repercussions for the team.

All things considered, using this criteria Billy Martin wouldn't have been allowed to sell Pepsi at D-Backs games.

Apparently it wouldn't have made a difference:

The D-Backs admitted Tuesday they had not done a thorough background check on Backman, but Kendrick said then, “We would have hired him” even if the team had uncovered the arrests.

If someone would like to explain the logic behind that, I'm all ears.

Wow... I do feel pretty badly for Wally but hopefully getting all this out in the open now, and then keeping his nose clean for a few years, will result in another opportunity. The guy was minor league manager of the year twice wasn't he?

I think this is not a good move on the part of the D-Backs, actually. It's pretty low class. Backman purposely backed out of other jobs, specifically telling the Mets that he was withdrawing from the interview process, to take this job. That's lousy.

And I can understand the assault stuff, but since when does declaring bankruptcy make you a bad baseball manager?!

So they replace Bob Brenly with Bob Melvin. Aren't they like, the same person?

I don't see how anybody can blame the Diamondbacks here. According to what I've heard on ESPN Radio, the DBacks asked Backman if there was anything of this nature in his past and he lied about it.

Backman was in the White Sox organization managing the Birmingham Barons up until this year. He was no longer welcome with the team because he was basically openly campaigning for the manager job while Jerry Manuel was still employed. That's extremely unprofessional.

The guy seems to have a few issues. I think the Diamondbacks are better off without him.

If the Diamondbacks don't win another World Series this year it's because they didn't have Backman to lead them there.

These incidents occurred in 2001. He coached in their system this past year. Why is it an issue now? Something is not right here unless there is something else that no one wants to discuss publicly.

Before you said that, I initially had Bob Brenly's face in my mind when I saw Bob Melvin was to be the new manager. So yeah, I think they are the same person!

Backman should wait a few years, and then UCF can hire him to be their baseball coach. George O'Leary sure has whipped the football team into shape.

Come to think of it I never have seen them in the same place at the same time.

This is complete garbage. Ray Lewis is charged in a homicide, and could have gone to jail, but Wally Backman is the bad guy?
