What do you feel are some good online league advertising tips?
One might want to consider addressing what others look for when joining a league: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ad.php?t=70692 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ad.php?t=48257 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ad.php?t=43673 But what else? Please also state the perspective you are speaking from, whether it as someone who advertises leagues or as someone who looks for leagues to join. Thanks.

In the perspective of the commissioner (me)
I state the league name (not in abbreviations, usually have it linked to the site), the type of league, and how long the league has been standing for. Say how the GM activity is, and what kind of GM core we have. I announce what teams are open at this time, along with some info on each team. I put up my e-mail address, and where I can be contacted, also, I would ask for some information about the GM, including name, IM screen names if the GM uses one, e-mail addy, and the leagues involved. As my perspective as a GM, I pretty much look for the same thing.

It’s important to educate new online owners about these details. When one first begins playing the game, some of the big differences between different types of leagues aren’t obvious. Yet rookie owners will have a better online OotP league experience if they figure out what sort of setup they like (for example, with or without financials, etc.).

Do most commishes feel that there is a best time (or times) of their season to advertise, that is, times when more people are likely to join? I figure most people are most interested in joining a new league at the beginning of a season, but are times like the all-star break and before the play-offs also good times?

This might sound silly, but a good avatar might help you. You admit you're not a well-known person here, avatars help. Even me, someone who is probably recognizable to most forum members, has a difficult time recruiting at times. It certainly cannot be easy for newer people. Bringing in some other well-known people early like we did with the KBL probably helps create some buzz to get others to join. They don't even really have to do anything but post that they joined, just knowing that other respected members joined a league makes others feel more confident that it is worth their own time. They don't even have to join, just having a bunch of respected members post their best wishes helps. The TCB is also a fictional league and unfortunately it seems that the market is fairly saturated for fictional leagues. I believe there's a greater demand for real leagues and OOTP6 really has not done much to bring in a bunch of new people like many of us had hoped. I don't think there's much you can do if the market is indeed saturated. You probably don't have the resources to do OOTP's job for them and you won't get far if you try to sabotage your competitors. You could try to outdo the rest of us though and I hope you do because then it might give me some more ideas. ![]() I hope others have some better suggestions for you. Best of luck.

I think having a couple of GM's who are active in these forums in the league definitely goes a long way. When I was league shopping, I'd click on the league links in people's signatures to get a feel for what the leagues were like. If I didn't see any familiar names, I'd pass.

Leagues your in are the best place to get GM's especially since you probably know them ahead of time. |

G'luck bro.
We were fortunate to be able to snag a fantastic group of owners (including remangiii) right off the bat. I think that's contributed to a lot of really unique (read: smartass) and smart owners that have been active. We're entering season two, and I'm about to find out what kind of retention problems we may have. It's looking like we may have lost as many as a half-dozen folks in the first season. Not great, but not horrible either. I also think you're coming in during a dead period. Or at least to me it seems that way. A couple months ago, people would jump at the chance to join our league. We had folks on the waiting list and such. Now, we've got an open team and no one has touched it...yet. I've much to learn, but so far, so good. Good thread, btw. -E

How long does it take to fill a league? My Jamaica League took 25 days to fill 15 teams, and I had many advantages. My biggest boost was having been the Commissioner of the NPBL for almost a year beforehand; it has 24 teams. I had also been active on these boards for well over a year. There was no way it could have been easier for me to attract owners, and it still took me almost a month for 15 teams. Commissioners who start new leagues need to know that it will take a while to fill their leagues at first, especially if they’re inexperienced.
There’s no way to tell how many leagues are starting and folding, or how many owners are joining or quitting leagues. If all that information were posted in a public place, we could figure some sort of index to reflect the activity in OotP online leagues and their populations. We could try to collect data and figure something out but I don’t think it would be accurate enough to go through the trouble of tracking. |

Don't know how useful this is going to be to the discussion, but here's my two cents.
I started the league I run before I really ever joined the forums here. I did have the benefit of being in three (non-OOTP) leagues at the time, which is where I started my recruiting from. I did ask the commissioners of each league if they minded before I sent out a league-wide e-mail. The last two or three spots were filled by people recommended by the initial recruits. I've gotten lucky. I've only lost one owner in the year and a half I've been running the league, and one of my owners has become an active member of the KBL as well. I like to think that, if I were to start a league now, I have a little bit of reputation to go on. Maybe not so much on these forums, but in the leagues I'm a part of. Someone will undoubtedly smack me down if I don't. But I think that's a big part of it: having a bit of a reputation. If you're advertising for a league on these boards, it's very helpful to know a few people that can vouch for you, even if they're not joining your league. I know that when I joined the KBL, I didn't know much about anyone involved in it, other than that I'd made a trade with kq76 in the UBL when we were both members, and he seemed like a good guy. Add to the fact that he was a post count Hall of Famer here, and I took a shot. I haven't regretted it. My own personal priority list for what I look for in a league starts with making sure it's fictional, but after that, I tend to look for professionalism. That encompasses website, rules, owners/commissioners and board demeanor. I've seen a lot of leagues I'd love to join if I had the time, and I'm guessing a lot of people that frequent fictional leagues are in a similar boat: they're booked solid already. Anyway, I've rambled on long enough.
