Do you mean FTP program or web host?

As for FTP, On my Windows (when I had it before the motherboard turned into french fries) I used Flash FXP. On my macintosh, I use cuteFTP.

As for web space, I use HelloHost - http://www.hellohost.com

For Web Space, All in 1 solution is the best. Simleaguecentral is good as well. ANd for FTP...I use SmartFTP. CuteFTP is good too.

For an FTP program, I always recommend http://www.ws-ftp.com . It costs $45 after a 30 day free trial, but it's well worth it.

Owners can ftp their lineups to the server using the game itself, they do not need an ftp program. You might not need one either if your host offers ftp access via the web. I use CuteFTP myself, but there are many other options, see http://download.com.com/sort/3150-2160-0-1-5.html?.

I think I read you saying you've been in an online league before. Your questions (others elsewhere) don't seem to indicate that that is the case, at least not to the point where you really understand how it all works. You really might want to consider participating in an online league to that point, however long it might take, before starting up one. I myself spent a year of real time, over a dozen seasons, before I even started considering starting up the KBL. The workload alone as commish can really be quite considerable, especially if you do more than the bare essentials. Add onto that not really knowing how online leagues work and I can assure you it won't be easy. I think I know the game quite well and I still have to bug others for advice.

As for the webspace question, see this thread: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ight=bandwidth

But it depends on:

-how many teams are in the league as that affects the amount of files viewable (reports, etc) and downloadable (sim zips, etc),
-how big your sim zips are (I can keep ours at around 1.5MB, 24 teams, but I delete all the pxxx.html files and only include new or modified files. I've seen a number of leagues that don't seem to care about this and have much larger zips.)
-how many and how big your extra files are (I believe BOSI and Cato are fairly large, but you might also have other extras)

I'd start off relatively small (CommishJoe could probably give you the best answer on whatever that is) and then if things work out and you want more space and bandwidth, get more.

I figured this might be what you thought. The exports are not directly ftp'd to the commish's ftp program or computer (well they could be, but I doubt that's an option for you). They are ftp'd to your host's (say OOTP's OLS or CommishJoe's) server computer somewhere on the internet. The commish then imports these exports from the host's server computer. GMs could email their exports to the commish who can then import them from his own computer, but trust me, it's much easier to have your GMs ftp their exports and the commish just presses one button to import them all. In diagram form:

GM Computer -> Host Computer -> Commish Computer

Not:

GM -> Commish

so what is cuteftp , smartftp, etc for the commish use for?

i tought those programs you can upload files to it..

for example if a commish has a 16 team league ...all 16 owners will export there team thru ftp in the team setup....

but the commish needs cuteftp, smartftp, or a web site that has ftp host, for him to received the file that way?

so these ftp programs u can set it up to received files from your owners?

You use those programs for uploading files (other than the reports) to your league's website. You don't need it for downloading anything, you can download the imports using the game.

not necessarily... if you are just going to be importing/exporting and uploading the reports the game generates, you don't need an external ftp program.

you get your login and password from your ISP (internet service provider). Then use that to setup the ftp section in the online league setup menu within OOTP.

I use WS FTP95 LE which was free. I'm not sure if it's still available. In any case, I've found that this program is MUCH faster than the FTP client provided within the game.

Really?!? WS FTP95 LE was the slowest FTP program I've ever used. I was using bluezone (seagull) ftp, but have begun using cuteFTP because it is faster and more stable.

Maybe I'm just lucky and the stars, er uh, my computer configuration is aligned or something. It is the quickest FTP program of all of the ones that I tested.

You need to get web hosting and a domain name. OOTP has an official server you can access that can be found at the top of this forum. A couple of other sources were listed in this thread, and there are literally over 10,000 companies to choose from to provide it.

For a domain name, I would suggest someplace like http://www.godaddy.com . They have a ton of ads but you are in complete control of your domain. I've heard too many horror stories about companies stealing people's domain names. I've been using GoDaddy for about 2 years now for domain names, and I don't have any complaints .. other then they try REAL HARD to get you to buy other stuff.

As for why to use an external FTP program, there are scripts/methods of zipping the HTML reports, uploading the one file, then extracting them on your server. Saves you the trouble of uploading 3,000 odd files. Also, OOTP doesn't support uploading the league files, which you'll need to zip and put on the site after each sim. Just in case you don't have a zip program, http://www.winzip.com is the best one I've found, and it's free.
