Live sims?

The playoffs are approaching in the league I run, and I'm thinking about running live sims for the championship series to have the two owners manage their teams if they both want.

Of course, I've never participated in live sims, so I'm not sure how people run them. But I know there are a number of leagues that do this, so...

If your league runs live sims, how do you do it? What suggestions do you have for a league that wants to run live sims? All input appreciated, even if it's "What are you, crazy?".

Thanks!

Live sims are pretty fun. They vary from just posting scores and injuries and standings at the end, to actually doing a play by play description. There's also the middle ground, where games are simmed inning by inning, until an interesting point is reached where the play by play can begin.

Any way you do it, be prepared to type A LOT, because OOTP doesn't help you with this at all. You can't cut and paste anything from in the game.

The one tip I have is for the commish to use a distinctive bold font, because official game updates may get lost in the sea of chatter that's going on at the same time.

Good luck! Hope it goes well.

I do a live sim all year. At 5PM I make a chat room and wait till 5PM. I do it not only to bring the group together as this keeps the excitement but also to make it as legit as possible. After the SIM I give all records and injuries. I then give out player development to all teams there as I am uploading the league. For playoffs we set a night to do it. I allow all managers to make any changes at any time and if there is a game 7 in the AL/NLCS or in the WS I do a half inning SIM at a time.. It's a load of fun..

What you could do is sim the game and then copy and paste the log one play at a time. You'll know the outcome, but the others won't.

I think the other posters are missing your point, Jeff. You're talking about a live sim where the two owners can manage their team in real-time.

What you'll need to do is the following:
  • Open an AIM chat room with the two owners managing, as well as any other owners who want to watch.
  • Open AIM dialogues individually with each of the two managing owners.
  • Set both teams to Human-managed
  • Announce the play-by-play in the chat room.
  • Let the two managers know that, after each play you announce, they will have 5 seconds to type a "WAIT" message, then type their instruction, such as "Steal 2nd" or "Sac Bunt"
  • Input any instructions from the managers, then run the next batter
It'd be kind of a pain, but I think it would also be a lot of fun. Good luck!

Yeah, the MBBA and the FIBB have done their All-Star Game this way forever it seems like. We don't "live manage" real games though.

Yeah, this is more what I had in mind, though I certainly appreciate everyone's comments, as they've given me other ideas.

I admit, I'm a glutton for work with this league. We do daily sims of one game a day, and I do a "news story" for one of those games. But it's also a lot of fun, and I don't mind the work. So live in-game managing for a potential 7-game series isn't too much of an issue for me.

We hold live sims if people express interest, or if we set one. Sometimes if there's enough people online we'll just open up a chat and do the live sim.

The League and I love to do it, and it provides immediate fun right then and there. Highly recommend LIVE SIMS!

Just to give you an idea, here's a live chat transcript from the MBBA's 1978 All-Star Game.

You may want to talk to Cuss about this. He created his own program that allows two owners to do play by play, and then it relays all that information to the spectators. It's really cool. So yeah, talk to him.
