Java applets or Flash .. which causes the most headaches?
I'm thinking about an upgrade to BOSI that would require either an Applet or Flash to pull off. Since you will be the ones using it, I figured I'd ask to see if anyone has had problems with either. I think I remember someone saying Flash was a pain, but I'm just an old, overworked, old man so I can't remember that far back

Why would flash be a pain? I would definately go with flash. You will get high quality graphics with faster download rates. It depends on what you want to do with it though.

This won't actually be displaying graphics .. just text. The source of the text would be a text file generated by BOSI's import process.
Exactly what I'm going to use this for I'd like to keep a surprise for now I just wanted to make sure no one had a problem with either method before I start my research on which one I want to use.

I understand. Well....your decision will be based on what you will be using it for. Either one will be fine Im sure.

Well there is the problem of some people no longer having a copy of MS's java and the substitute Sun java plugin displaying things not in the way intended by the java maker. However, there are some places (not microsoft) that have the old MS java available for download and you could direct them to that.
Personally, I find flash (well at least I assume they are flash) extremely annoying. However, it sounds like this might be something we might really like. I would think it's probably best to go with the fastest loading, whatever that is.

Ok, I'll let the cat out of the bag.
When I went to the Twins game the other night, I looked at the scoreboards in the OF and was watching the progress of the KC-NYY game. That's when it hit me. On the new BOSI front page, have a scoreboard for each league. Complete with scores from the previous day or two, matchups for the next day or two, standings, records for the last sim, and league leaders. This scoreboard would refresh every 5-10 seconds. Now, if I just wanted to use HTML for this, I'd have to use IFrames. From what I hear, those are un-stable on some browsers. So, I figured my choices were either Flash or a Java applet.

I'd go with flash, for some of the reasons that people already mentioned (mainly, some people may not have the JVM installed by default on Windows). There's also more you can do with Flash, and it's typically faster to load.
Just make sure we can use then outside of the main BOSI interface. Would love to add this to the league main page.

I'll see what I can do. One of the enhancements of BOSI v2 will be to create a Nuke like front end utility. Jack and I are talking about how we'll try to make this version plug into independent front pages easier then the current version does.
