Question Your Experience with Selecting All-Stars?

Because of Pierre's great new all-star player selector utility (see http://www.400softwarestudios.com/bo...threadid=39117), the CBL is looking to have our GMs select our all-star teams this season. However, before we decide on the process I wanted to see what the experience of other leagues was who select their all-star teams. How best do you think it is to go about it? Some questions I raised in our forum were:

1) Should all players be eligible, or just those who meet a minimum criteria like PAs or innings played (a fielding stat) for batters and BFs or innings pitched for pitchers, or should they have to be nominated somehow?

2) If it should be a minimum criteria, what should the minimum # be per game or per 162 game season (please specify what stat you mean for that #)?

3) Should the entire league select players for both leagues or just their own league? I think only their own league as you could try to select bad players for the other league.

If there are any other issues we should look into, please bring them up.

TIA

Well people usually won't select "bad players" for the other league but I guess it also depends on the league. Letting everyone vote for both leagues does create more excitement. As a matter of fact it is not odd to see a Commish let non-members vote for All Stars.

As Commish I would create a ballot at each position for people to pick from. Include someone from every team at each position if possibe but you need to somewhat limit the choices just like real MLB does. From there let your owners vote and see how it goes. You can always adjust as the seasons go by.

Have fun!

In the USBA we have been selecting our own All Stars for years. We put together a ballot (the last two seasons Hammer and DelgadoDawg have been instrumental in helping with this) that lists all the starters for each team at each position and statistics to help voters decide. The ballot usually does not include anyone who has not had sufficient playing time.

The owners vote on starters for each league. You are allowed to vote for your own team's players. I have seen leagues that prohibit this but it does not make sense to me. I have seen very few instances, if any, of blatant ballot box stuffing.

A nice addition is that the defending league champions get to pick the rosters. To increase the level of excitement for all owners, we use the MLB rule of having at least one representative from every team. It makes for a challenging effort on the part of each manager!

I then sim the game and attempt to get all the players in the game. It's a lot of fun and worth the extra effort. With Pierre's new utility, the effort should be easier!

Hope this helps!

The LLM (formerly CDML) always selects our own all-stars... as commish, I nominate all players eligible... I leave off players that are way off pace from real all-stars (i.e. avg of .220 with 5 hr, etc)... the owners vote for one player at each offensive position... 4 SP's, 1 MR and 2 CL's... then I let the previous season's "world series" owners to pick all backups... I plan to use this utility

Thanks everyone, especially Hammer for IMing me last night and discussing all this at length with me.

One more question though, what do you think about a rule of having at least 1 player from every team? Do you like having the controversy or no? Personally, I don't like the idea, but I can see how others might argue that everyone should see a rep for their team in the ASG.

I answered that in my post above. I do require managers to name one rep from every team. It gives everyone some interest in seeing how their player does.
We have not had any controversey that I am aware of. We did increase the All Star rosters to 28 rather than the default 25 which helped considerably.
