please explain all stars

I don't understand all star voting and it's the same every year all star results come out your starter finished 4th in the voting for starting pitchers. why is he not an all star? I've seen position players finish second and not get an all star icon next to their profile but finish 3rd the following year and get one?? they always take 4 starters to an all star game as far as I know cuz they all pitch an inning I don't get it

When you say "finish third" etc., are you asking about the voting? That's just for the starters. To get a star on their profile, they have to actually be chosen for the team and that's a separate email than the final voting results. Some may not make it as they lose out to more popular players, or there is a wealth of talent at a particular position, or every team needs a representative (if toggled on). So, it can certainly happen that someone comes in second in the voting at a given position and does not make the team.

I am also miffed at AL Star selections. I currently have a pitcher in July with a 10-3 record and good stats. He didn't make it. Yet a guy who is 5-6 did.

Im not even talking about snubs the popular players always out vote most deserving. One year I'll have a guy finish second in all star voting and not get an all star icon and then the next year i have a guy finish 3rd in final results and he gets an icon I just dont understand it. Just had a starting pitcher finish 3rd in all star voting final results didnt get an icon. I know mlb takes a decent amount of starters for all star. Unless its simply down to changing the toggle where not all teams have to have atleast 1 all star.

Why do you expect someone who doesn't make the all-star team to get an icon saying they did? As LansdowenSt said, the voting is only for the starters, the rest are decided by the players and commissioner's office, the vote totals have no bearing.

Who picks the reserves and pitchers?
In short, it's a group effort between the player ballot and the Commissioner's Office. A change made in 2017 resulted in All-Star skippers no longer having a say in selections, so there's no longer the potential for any perceived conflicts of interest.

If that's how it is that's fine but it doesn't show you the final results voted on by players and the commish office you just see the top 3 or 5 at each position final results how do you know without just seeing if he gets an icon or not.

It does show this though. It's a different email. Here are two screenshots. You seem to be describing the one with the fan voting final results. But that same day, in addition to the final AL fan voting results and final NL fan voting results, there is a third email that has the actual players that made the team. Here is that screenshot with "All-Star Rosters Have Been Announced".

If I kept scrolling down, it would show all the players on both teams. THESE are the actual all-stars. The ones with asterisks are the ones that were voted in at their position (starters).

hope this helps.

As a GM you actually don't want your guys making All-Star teams because of 2 very important reasons:

1 - They might get hurt in a meaningless game which then hurts your overall team

2 - They expect to get a raise because of this and will demand more money. Your job as the GM is to extract as much as you can from each player while paying them the very least amount of money and then getting rid of that player while he still has a little value for a player with potential and very little compensation.

This is why I schedule my All-Star game, but once the final rosters are picked I cancel the game. And during the break, I have my trade deadline one day and the draft another. Also gives all players 4 days off.
