OOTP clogging up my one drive

I really don't pay much attention to my one drive files -- probably my mistake -- but I opened it up the other day and found there are thousands and thousands of OOTP screen shots in there.
Most of them are player head shots. Some are stadiums. I just know they make up probably 95 percent of the items in the archieve.
First, how do I stop this.
Second, how do I clean it out -- since none of them are things worth saving -- without doing a mass cleanse which will delete the things I want to keep.

If you have a lot of OOTP sims saved, including past and current versions of the game, and don't delete them, they will accumulate. If you no longer play a save, delete it. It can be done from the Load Game screen or directly via the file directory. Also, if you have past OOTP versions and are not playing those saves, delete those saves too. You won't risk your current save's important stuff if you tackle it from a "delete unnecessary save" approach versus a dangerous "delete all faces" approach.

Game Settings>Global Setting controls what gets retained long term for going-forward saves.

Yup. Unless you absolutely have to have it, uninstall OneDrive. And if you really want something like it, but don't have to use OD, use DropBox or GoogleDrive. OD is the first program I uninstall from any Windows install.

Whatever you use, you can probably exclude OOTP's folders from it (a quick google should easily tell you how).

If you really do have way more screenshots than anything else, I wonder what's triggering it. F12 creates screenshots in the game, but that's not usually a key people will accidentally press. I wonder if you have some other program installed that's creating screenshots. I'd recommend a one-time deep scan with 2 different antivirus programs (Windows and Malwarebytes) just to be sure.

I bought a new Windows 11 laptop in the fall, and OOTP selected OneDrive by default for saved games and other game data. Because of the sheer number of files that had to be synched, OneDrive couldn't handle it. I wound up uninstalling the game, doing a custom install, and then selecting a custom data path in the Settings to somewhere on my computer that wasn't OneDrive. My saved game was already on a USB drive from when I initially moved it over from my old computer, so I just copied it over to the new location and then deleted anything that was on OneDrive. Everything has worked great since then.

This thread is great - been wanting to get rid of One Drive for a while. Thank you for all the suggestions. Looks like Google Drive will be my best option.

Oh, yeah. I went through this to and also ended up disabling one drive. Agree with the advice to delete old files, regardless of where they are housed.

I really don't get why some people claim OneDrive is so bad and the first thing they uninstall. For what it is, a way to back up your documents, it works just fine. It doesn’t slow down your system unless your computer is a potato or you’re using programs like OOTP that dumps thousands of tiny files on it. I think some people just like to feel edgy and in-the-know about tech stuff.

OneDrive is the worst. Particularly if you have lots of files. Of files of any size. It is on by default and you get 5 GB for 'free'. Good look if you start 'sychninig; your files and you get faced with PAYUP for more space. Have fun trying to reorganizing your files.
You can't even do a simple incremental backup of files.
Safer with an extenral HD.
Google Drive is 15 GB and much better

I think it stinks. First off, how about I decide if I even want it or not. I don't mind new stuff but leave it off instead of forcing people to "try it out" at least until you understand what it is and what it does.

Onedrive as a concept is not bad. I just wish two things.

It had better servers, and it gave users more control.

First of all, it copies ALL of your files. And does so at horrible upload speeds.
I have 2.5 GB download speed and 1 GB upload speed. Onedrive gives me maybe 5 mbps of upload speed.
It is so slow.

Second, and this is the worst. Is that I use multiple PCs for different purposes.

I tried to give Onedrive a chance on my gaming PC

I then half a year later purchase a new business PC for my work related matters.
I sign into my Microsoft account, and Onedrive begins to start pulling over seemingly my entire hard drive off my gaming PC.

Including games and screenshots and registry entries for games.
Stuff I did not want on a work PC.

I think Onedrive tries to be too much. If it was for documents and photos and the like. It would be fine.
But it tries to be a HDD cloning service as well and ties is all to your Microsoft account.
And does it all at a glacial pace.

If it gave users more control over what they wanted to upload to the cloud, it would be far better.
As it is now, it is a black hole that takes everything.

Hi, coming at this from an IT professional's perspective: OneDrive is great for most business aspects, not so much for gaming. If you have multiple machines, want cloud access of files, or just a quasi-backup of all your personal files? Pretty decent option if you have a Microsoft 365 account, or barely any files and can do it for free. Heck, you can deselect sub-folders (such as the "Out of the Park Developments" folder) to prevent things you don't want synchronizing online from happening.

This being said, the speed of upload and download for OneDrive are pretty horrendous for folders with a large quantity of oft-changing small files, such as OOTP save game folders. This is likely why the Steam Cloud service has never been implemented, because the save files are too large and change too often to synchronize consistently.

I've attempted to utilize Dropbox and Google Drive, but even on an extremely fast computer with an incredible internet connection, it still has pretty lackluster performance. I have a Synology NAS device at home (for those who may not know what that is, it's essentially a small file server) with great throughput which I've attempted to create symbolic links to so I can access the same save game files just on my network, but this just destroys my performance of the game file on whatever machine I'm currently playing on.

The most consistent way to keep offline games between multiple computers has been to physically copy the backup to a flash drive, external USB Hard Drive, or external USB Solid State Drive, and merge it onto the other machine I want to play on.

-------

Crazy rant aside, you can still use OneDrive, but remove the sync of the OOTP folder by doing a couple of steps, assuming your "Out of the Park Developments" folder and save files are in your "Documents" folder:
1. Open OneDrive Settings (usually right click the OneDrive icon in the taskbar, then hit the gear icon in the top right of the little window that opens, then hit OneDrive Settings)
2. Go to Sync and Backup > Manage backup > then deselect Documents folder
3. After turning that off, go to Account > Choose folders, and then deselect your OOTP folder from that menu. You'll have to hit the arrow next to the Documents folder to find it. If you want the rest of your Documents folder to back up and the boxes are not currently checked, check off that top Documents folder to select everything underneath it, then just deselect the OOTP folder

I wish I could answer your second part about how to clean it up in general, but I'm not terribly confident in a way to remove the excess items. I know there are settings to delete retired players in Game Settings and that there's a purge tool, but I have no real experience with these unfortunately.

FHM 11 moved the default data path which now bypasses the OneDrive backup (theoretically, it should be easy to select what is and what is not backed up on OneDrive, but try as I might over the years, I have been unsuccessful in deselecting my OOTP folder)

Have to look at the specifics on where FHM 11 is and replicate that. Should be easy, correct?
