DC Managerial Strategy Files

I've wanted for a long time to make more managerial profiles for OOTP, because while the stock ones some user made years ago are cool, I thought the game just doesn't have enough managerial diversity, especially when you play solo primarily like I do.

So these are some managerial profiles, based both on the stock managerial profiles, and also some unorthodox ones just to mix stuff up, that I've created with explanations in case you want to spice your gaming experience.

Down the road, I'll start making more curated ones that actually change conditions based on the game situation, but given how endlessly tedious it is to create these, I optimized initially for just making some based ones to get going.

Per usual, I think this stuff is only for me, but I figure it's worth sharing with others too.

You can download all strategy profiles from this zip. I am trying to update the zip as I make new ones, too.

Managerial Strategy Pack #1

Here are the first five:

Aggressive Running:
Real throwback style skipper who loves to push the action on the basepaths. Gives runners the green light frequently and isn't afraid to take extra bases. More traditional with the defensive alignments but will matchup with platoons when it makes sense.

Old School Small Ball:
Loves to play small ball - you'll see plenty of bunts and squeeze plays with this one. Heavy on defensive shifts but won't pull pitchers quickly. Classic National League style manager who isn't too concerned with matchups.

Extreme Platoon:
Lives and dies by the matchups. Quick with the hook and always looking for platoon advantages. Will manage the bullpen aggressively and isn't afraid to burn the bench to get the right batter-pitcher matchup.

Hold and Shift Commander:
Defense-first manager who's obsessed with controlling the running game and positioning. Very aggressive with holding runners and shifting the defense. More measured on offense but will use small ball when needed.

Speed and Defense Gambler:
Loves to create havoc on the bases while playing it safe with dangerous hitters. Will take risks running but prefers to pitch around power threats. Not big on defensive shifts but positions the infield aggressively.

Managerial Strategy Pack #2

Infield Control Artist:
Big believer in the squeeze play and infield positioning. Quick to make pitching changes and likes to control the game through infield defense. Not a big baserunning team, but they'll force you to defend the bunt all day long.

Defensive Opportunist:

Defense-first manager who loves to shift the outfield and isn't afraid to sacrifice bunt. Will make moves to get platoon advantages at the plate and use pinch hitters liberally. Very proactive with defensive positioning.

Progressive Sabermetric:
Modern-minded skipper who gets more aggressive with matchups and shifting as the game goes on. Conservative early but will pull out all the stops late, especially with defensive alignments and bullpen usage.

Progressive Small Ball:
Starts games playing it straight but ramps up the small ball tactics as the game progresses. More likely to bunt and run late in games. Smart with defensive positioning but won't overdo it early.

Progressive Traditional:

Old school early, new school late. Lets starters work deeper but gets aggressive with the bullpen in late innings. Will play more small ball and matchup baseball as the game goes on.

Managerial Strategy Pack #3

Corner Defense Specialist

This manager really emphasizes positioning at the corners and guards the lines aggressively. Heavy on defensive shifts, especially with outfield and depth adjustments. Pretty bold with the squeeze play too. Won't pull pitchers quickly but loves to play matchups with both pitchers and hitters. Moderate with basic running game but will use pinch runners frequently to get the right speed on the bases when needed. Bit of an interesting mix of old and new school - combines traditional pitcher usage with modern defensive tactics.

Manufacturing Runs Master

Really emphasizes creating runs through every small ball tactic in the book. Not afraid to steal but also loves the bunt game - both sacrifice and squeeze plays. Pretty aggressive with pitching around dangerous hitters and will adjust defensive depth frequently. Likes to use their bench, especially with pinch runners and pinch hitters late in games. Patient with pitchers but will look for platoon advantages when they make moves. You'll see a lot of action with this manager - they're always trying to make something happen on offense.

Complete Game Artist
Likes to let pitchers work but isn't afraid of being aggressive elsewhere. Pretty balanced running game with both steals and hit & runs in play. Strong believer in both sacrifice and squeeze bunts. Really emphasizes guarding the lines and using infield shifts. Patient with their pitching staff - you'll see starters go deep if they're effective. Will look for matchup advantages with both pitchers and hitters but won't overmanage. Kind of a mix of old and new school - traditional with pitcher usage but modern with defensive alignments.

Sacrifice Shift
Really goes all-in on the sacrifice bunts and squeeze plays - this manager will play for one run whenever they get the chance. Heavy emphasis on guarding the lines and infield positioning too. Pretty moderate with the running game but not afraid to hold runners. Shows patience with both starters and relievers, and while they care about matchups, they won't overdo it. Active with the bench for pinch hitting situations. This is definitely a manager who believes in manufacturing runs through bunts while playing solid positional defense.

Donnie Watson

A real student of Tony LaRussa's style who's put his own spin on it. Famous for completely changing his approach based on the scoreboard. When his team's trailing, he'll push the action aggressively with steals and baserunning that would make you think he's a different manager entirely. But give him a lead, and he morphs into an ultra-conservative tactician who'll use his whole bullpen and defensive alignments to protect it. Players say they feel like they're playing for two different skippers depending on whether they're up or down

Bruto Wallace

Wallace has developed a reputation as one of the most situational managers in baseball. In close games, he's all about platoon advantages and defensive shifts, keeping things tight. When he's got a small lead, the defensive shifts get even more pronounced and you'll see a lot of pinch hitting. Give him a big lead, and he'll start holding runners aggressively while letting his pitchers work deeper. But it's when his team is trailing big that you see the real Bruto - he'll start running wild, pushing aggressive baserunning and letting his hitters loose. Players say he's got a different gameplan for every situation, but they always know exactly what he wants.

Rick Hawley

One of the most detail-oriented managers in the game who brings both modern thinking and old-school tactics to the table. Known for his aggressive bullpen management and matchup plays, but he's not afraid to call for a squeeze or hit-and-run when the numbers back it up.

His teams are always well-positioned defensively, and you'll rarely catch his defense out of place. Players say he's got a binder full of statistics but still trusts his gut on when to push the action. Not the most aggressive on the basepaths, but he'll take calculated risks when he sees a weakness. Really shines in late-game tactical battles where he can leverage both his matchup preferences and small ball skills.

Pete Larsson

Made his name in the minors by developing a sophisticated approach to pitcher workload that caught the attention of several MLB front offices. Runs one of the most structured pitching operations in baseball - every starter knows their pitch count limit, and every reliever understands their role.

Not afraid to use an opener when the matchup calls for it, but he's methodical about it. Very active with defensive positioning and loves to hold runners, but conservative on offense to protect his pitching matchups. Players appreciate his systematic approach and clear communication about roles, even if it means getting pulled earlier than they might like. He's helped several young arms develop into solid big leaguers while keeping his veteran pitchers fresh deep into the season.

Delbert Mccracken

One of baseball's most creative minds who's known for his unconventional lineups and willingness to try anything. Famous for moving pitchers to the outfield for an inning to bring them back to face a key hitter later. Big believer in defensive versatility and keeping everyone involved. Players love his loose clubhouse atmosphere but don't mistake that for a lack of preparation - he's incredibly detailed with matchups and positioning

Rob Davidson

Analytics-driven manager who's masterful with bullpen matchups. You'll rarely see his pitchers face the same part of the lineup three times - he's got his leverage numbers ready and isn't afraid to go to his pen early. Heavy on defensive shifts and positional flexibility. Not big on small ball but will run selectively. Players know they need to stay ready because he'll use his entire roster to get the matchups he wants.

Max Baker

Old school leader who trusts his veterans and lets them play. Known for sticking with his starters longer than most modern managers would. Not big on defensive shifts but positions his fielders well. Conservative with his bullpen usage - prefers defined roles and won't often use his closer before the 9th. Players love how he lets them play through struggles and keeps a steady approach regardless of score

Pete Rose
Aggressive manager who treats every game like it's Game 7. Will push his veterans hard and expects maximum effort. Loves to force the action with hit-and-runs and aggressive baserunning. Not afraid to challenge umpires or opposing teams. Very traditional in his approach - doesn't care for modern defensive shifts or matchup plays. Players know they better hustle or they won't play

Ned Yost
Stubborn loyalist who sticks to his guns no matter what the critics say. Big believer in defined bullpen roles and won't deviate from them. Loves aggressive baserunning and will push the action on the bases whenever possible. Not interested in defensive shifts or modern analytics - he wants his players to be aggressive and play with confidence. Famous for sticking with struggling players longer than most would.

Kelly Thompson
Fundamentals-first manager who demands excellence in the basics. Runs an incredibly tight ship - if you can't execute the little things, you won't play. Heavy emphasis on defense and will pull players immediately for mental mistakes. Conservative with young players but will stick with veterans through struggles. Not flashy but consistently gets results through attention to detail.

Terry O'Brien
Master of managing personalities and bullpen usage. Incredibly creative with his relievers and will use his best arms in the highest leverage spots regardless of inning. Players love his straightforward communication style. Not afraid to buck traditional roles if the numbers support it. Gets the most out of role players and veterans through smart platoon usage

Frank Robinson
Aggressive strategist who believes in putting pressure on the defense at every opportunity. Heavy emphasis on taking extra bases and forcing defensive mistakes. Not interested in modern defensive shifts but positions his outfield aggressively. Quick with the hook on his pitchers and loves to use his bench late in games for matchup advantages

Negro League Managerial Pack

This collection brings the strategic brilliance of Negro League managers to OOTP, honoring their innovative approaches and lasting impact on baseball. The tactical stylings are a mix of the innovations of the day, with modern twists for each, offering you some managerial diversity while honoring the legends of yore who MLB ignored.

Vic Harris
A true baseball innovator who'd fit right into today's game. Takes conventional wisdom and flips it on its head. Loves to deploy his best relievers in the highest leverage spots regardless of inning, and will use positional flexibility to create matchup advantages anywhere in the lineup. Aggressive with defensive alignments but in unconventional ways. Players need to stay alert because he'll call for unexpected plays at any moment.

Dick Lundy
Classic baseball tactician with a twist - loves to use small ball early in games to build leads, then shifts to aggressive defensive alignments to protect them. Big believer in squeeze plays and bunting for hits, especially with a small lead. Will match up his pitchers carefully but won't pull them too quickly. Not afraid to use pinch runners aggressively even in early innings.

Lon Goodwin
A tactical innovator who brought international influence to his managing style. Conservative with traditional baseball early in games but transforms into one of the most aggressive managers in the late innings. Heavy on defensive alignments and matchups late, while using his bench aggressively for pinch running and situational hitting. Really pushes the action in the 7th and 8th innings, especially with runners and defensive positioning.

Oscar Charleston
One of the most aggressive managers ever when it comes to baserunning and stealing. Remarkable for how he varies his approach through different stages of the game. Patient with pitchers early but gets much more aggressive with matchups and defensive positioning late. By the 9th inning, he's pulling out all the stops - maximum aggression on the bases and heavy defensive shifts. Known for transforming his strategy completely in late innings

Winfield Welch
Big believer in a balanced offensive approach, mixing aggressive squeeze plays with calculated baserunning. Emphasizes defensive positioning at the corners and likes to intentionally walk dangerous hitters. Not afraid to use pinch runners aggressively and will play the percentages with matchups, but lets his pitchers work through trouble. Notable for how he uses the squeeze play more than most managers of his era
