2024-25 NBA Season Thread

Season openers were tonight. C's blew out the Nix w/a record 29 3pt's made. I looked it up: In the 79-80 season, the NBA added the 3 pt shot. Six of the 22 franchises that year did not make 29 3pt shots the entire season. Two of those teams were the NBA finalists, the Lakers & Sixers.

This is why I say among friends you can't really make an accurate comparison of this era of basketball w/the past. The game is completely different.

The all but complete elimination of the midrange jumper (it’s largely been replaced by those 3s) was another huge move.

It's become obsolete. And some coaches like Pitino think it is a bad play.

For the overwhelming majority of players, it’s just a lower percentage 2 point shot. There are guys who can consistently can midrange shots like Demar DeRozan but they’re extremely rare and I think it always was like that, it just didn’t quite click for some reason.

Small correction, they tied the record at 29 but did not break it. They now share the record.

They got the 29th with 10:39 left to go in the game and then went 0-10 from three and could not break the record.
But it will fall this season.

The contested midrange jumper is a bad shot. If you have an open one, by all means take it.

But for 95% of the league, a contested mid range shot is a bad shot.

The math is far better trying to get layups at the rim or taking a 3 point shot.

If you are going to take a long and contested mid range 2 point shot. Then might as well try and get 50% more points a take a 3.

Or just hang out beyond the arc and try and get an open or semi open 3.

There is still a place in the game for the mid range shot. It is just sort of a lot more limited than what it was.

The Atlanta Hawks launched 75 three-pointers in 1979-80 (the first year of the NBA three), which I believe is the all-time low for a single season. With 15 attempted threes in tomorrow night's game against the Wizards, the Celtics will eclipse that total.

The Hawks made 13 threes that season. Boston surpassed that number well before halftime last night.

Yep, the game has changed a bit...

And my pre season pick is OKC over Boston in the finals

Luka wins MVP
Wemby wins DPOTY
Castle is ROTY
Monk wins 6th Man
Kuminga wins MIP
Bud wins coach of the year

Wemby will average 4.0 BPG for the first time since since the 95-96 season

So, like I said, they hit a record 29 3's. Never said they broke it. Never said they set it. I said they had a record 29 3's.

I don't mind correction when it was warranted. This wasn't warranted.

Tying a record is a record. We can agree on that.
I just didn't want any casual fans to think they were the sole owners of said record.

It will be broken this season, maybe before the end of November.

With Lebron and Bronny getting a few minutes together, does this leave the NFL as the only major North American sport where a father and son have not played together?

I know we have seen it in auto racing, association football and a few other team sports.

I cannot think of any NFL players to do it.

Did Frank Gore retire before his son got into the NFL?

Edit: Just looked it up. Sr retired in 2022. Jr entered in 2024. That might be the closest we'll get.

Clippers start the season with both Load-Management and Ba-Ba-ba-Mo-Bamba out with injuries, nearly fell behind by 20 in the 1st half, roared back to take the lead (Cancer got hot in the 3rd quarter), choked away a 10 point lead in the final 2 minutes and then blew it in OT.

So pretty much on form, naturally.

An ex trainier for the Clippers files lawsuit accusing team of tampering and negligence in dealings with Kawhi Leonard.

Not sure what whether or not the Clippers were tampering to get Kawhi has to do with their firing Randy Shelton for cause. That reads like Shelton is throwing ALL the spaghetti against the wall.

That said, the recap of Load-Management's constant injuries is disheartening to say the least. And to think, we got the privilege for paying for all those missed games…and all it cost us was SG-A and every #1 pick we'll ever have!

(Yes, that was the trade for PG-13, the Pride of Palmdale…but Leonard wasn't coming here without George, so…)

Bucks 1-6. We're not going to talk about this?
