Still manage your games?
I ask this question very so many years. Who out there is still actually managing their games and not just as a GM? My favorite part of games like APBA were setting lineups and choosing what to do in given situations What I like best about this games is the choice of defensive strategy in the moment. So I am curious, who out there still is doing this? I feel like, although without evidence, that most people just sim now but I think just doing sims loses a large part of the emersion. Anyway, just curious. No judgements from me!

And actually I meant to say that I don't do a whole lot of as much the GM stuff and let my staff do that. I still keep a GM title though so I can override something I don't like. But my favorite part of the game is the day to day grind of winning baseball games rather than the financials. Best part of this game is your ability to make your own experience.

Both really! I have the time to be GM and play through a season. I usually pick an NL team and an AL team and grind through the season. I love the idea of having to think though the season series and going on a road trip. Just so much fun.

Playing Manager only has proved to be the most challenging way to play the game and I can't see myself ever going back. Guess you could say I've found my niche. And to answer the question more clearly, I play out every single game. |

I've always managed every game of my MLB team and then more less just GM'd my minor leagues with some extra tweaking here and there.
I've always done it this way ever since I started with OOTP maybe 10-15 years ago. For as much as I love playing this way, since managing every game is so time consuming I tend to only get 3 or 4 seasons deep with every OOTP release before the next version comes out. That means that so many roster moves, trades, etc. where I'm planning for the future and trying to build organizational depth never end up serving any purpose haha. Not to mention I've never been able to experience a whole new waive of players coming in to replace the current fleet of guys as they age. I think I have decided for the first time ever I'm going to try rolling my current save over to next years OOTP version for I can start getting a lot deeper into the game than I ever have before.... but to answer your initial question, I have always managed all of my games. |

I GM and also manage all of my team's regular season and postseason games. I do 7 day lineups for spring training games and sim those, however.

Last years game was the first time I ever managed every game but it took me till release of next years game to finish the whole season. I dont have the time to grind it like that so I GM let the assistant handle all the minor time consuming stuff and I only manage playoff games or if I have a super high prospect I'll manage their first career start

Managing every pitch is just too tedious for me. Personally I enjoy watching players grow and fall through the seasons. I sim day to day, a majority of my play is managing injuries, rosters, signings, etc etc. I really like watching my prospects develop, or the rare free agent breakout or using that veteran for one more playoff push before retirement.
Playing every game would annoy me because I’d want to win every one!

The last few years I've embraced managing after playing for more than ten years as a daily sim GM who exerts some control over lineups. The immersion helped renew my spark for the game, but there's no way I'm playing 162 since my chief joy is building an organization from the ground up as GM. After trial and error, I've settled on short season fictional saves (currently using a 66 game season with 90 being the most I've done lately) and put more energy into stadium mods and "world building" than past years playing standard MLB rebuilds and expansion.

I play as "GM" and set the lineups, depth chart and rotation. The rotation requires a little juggling to have the spot starter rested for doubleheaders, or to shuffle the #5 starter into the pen when there a days where he would be skipped.
Then I let my AI manager play each game while I watch. I keep the Reserve clause on and just ensure the proper players on the MLB roster. I let the AI manage the minors. I can watch a full season over a 3-4 weeks and then spend maybe another two weeks compiling stats and recharging for the next season. I put "GM" in quotes because I really don't even like to GM. Every time I played as a GM I tended to end up with unrealistic super teams which breaks the immersion for me. Ultimately I like watching "my team" as a fan and simply ensure that the players I think should be starting are actually starting. I'm a stat nerd so I lot of my enjoyment comes from tracking stats for my teams. Last edited by uruguru; 08-15-2024 at 07:22 PM. |

I enjoy both the GM and field manager roles. It's rewarding to make deals and promote rookies and see them work out. But my favorite part of the game is the strategy of managing, inning-by-inning.
The problem is that it takes a long time for me to complete a single season. Part of that is time spent on Spring Training, worrying over other teams rosters to make them competitive and to correct AI mistakes, and pursuing box scores from all teams. Plus it always takes me awhile to get the initial season setup right. All good.

I GM and manage generally, as I like to see how my strategies might work in a modern game. I am very much a Whiteyball-type, strong rotation and defense combined with an aggressive speed-based game.
I have occasionally gone GM only and run long careers, but have generally shied away from that in recent years (have been playing since OOTP 5), and the few times I have done manage-only, I have been frustrated with the GM's awful moves (traded away my best outfielder for a couple DH types and farmed my defensive replacement when I was in a pennant race, which caused my pitching to go to hell). |

Because there is no way and no plans to play head to head with friends like we did as kids.

Absolutely! Best way to really dig into how great OOTP is, in my opinion. I’ve managed all my team’s games for 16 years into my fictional league and I know the players better than the MLB. Absolutely love pitch by pitch, as well. It really builds the tension and adds an additional layer of personality to each of the players (esp pitchers)

I manage in one pitch mode from the 7th inning on. The 3D engine really makes this enjoyable for me and keeps getting incrementally better every year. To each their own and I’m sure few others are going to want to play the way I do (where I run every team in the league) but to me playing out the games keeps it from feeling like a spreadsheet.

Two of my hitters recently went through record hitless streaks. One went 0-for-32 and the other went 0-for-33. Both streaks ran concurrently and ended in the same game. The 0-for-33 streak ended with a home run in the 5th inning. The 0-for-32 streak ended a few batters later with a home run in the 6th inning. Just like in real baseball, there are remarkable coincidences that go completely unnoticed when you are zoomed out and only looking at entire seasons. So there's a real benefit to simming games if you take your time and pay attention to the season as it unfolds. But it's time-consuming. I've seen two of my pitchers lose no-hitters this season with one out in the 9th inning. Both times I had pulled the laptop over to my wife when the 9th started so that she could see the no-hitter. Argh! Last edited by uruguru; 08-18-2024 at 10:33 AM. |

Very cool! Yes, the story lines that develop over a season, a career or even a game are so cool.
I typically play two games a night, both with fictional franchises. The one I am GM and Manager. I use pitch-by-pitch, keep a scorecard and manage everything except baserunning and infield defense (that's why I have coaches). I love the flow of a long season and how you can really notice the different characteristics of the different players. I know when pitcher X is on the mound it's going to be a roller coaster with lots of pitches per plate appearance. I can really notice the effect of good vs poor fielders, strong arms vs weak arms, good framing vs bad. And in pitch by pitch, you can really feel the tension of different pitch counts and watch your pitcher lean into his best pitch to get a key strikeout. The other franchise I am just the owner. I hire/fire staff. Set budgets and team focus, override a trade in rare circumstances, etc. I watch this team's games in one pitch mode and just kick back in my private box with a beer. It's a small market team, so my object with this franchise is to turn a profit and be competitive every few years. All my games I play in 3D, very fast play by play, with static view WIDE or Action HP. I find the dynamic and follow ball camera too distracting. I'm in the 17th year of this fictional league and like I said above, I kind of know this league's history and it's players better than the MLB these days. |
