Thoughts on the game

I have been playing OOTP since 2009, so not the start of things, but long enough to experience substantial developments and evolution of the game. I am really trying to like 25, but between the continued bugs and interface, I can't get into this game.

I know that most folks who post on this forum are devoted players and don't care what legitimate issues the game has, but this version is just not enjoyable.

I've only played the game one year and really enjoy it. The developers seem very hands on and genuinely interested in feedback, so maybe just be a bit specific on what issues you're having and they could get addressed?

I've held off on starting an MLB save game because of the hiccups.

But the delay has given me a chance to look at different aspects of OOTP that I'd never looked at before. For example, experimenting with setting up extra fictional and real-world leagues in Asia, Europe, and South/Central America.

I've got a spreadsheet for MLB/MiLB and the other 34 leagues with all of the respective settings for each one. Once Patch 3 or 4 is out and the game appears good to go, I'll spend some days setting up my baseball universe, which will include the real-life top players in the respective non-MLB leagues.

OOTP is really an amazing achievement. The complexity of its moving parts will inevitably lead to some issues upon release. Give Markus and the Team time, they will smooth out the wrinkles before you know it.

Man, I don’t want to sound like I’m whitewashing things but I’ve been running my save since the betas and I am not really seeing any huge game breaking bugs and I can’t even with the interface, like it’s the same as it was last year, I just don’t get it. Is this really a gripe about indentation?

I'm with Syd on this. I'm 64 games into my fictional league and started as soon as it was available on Steam. This is my 5th year playing and I don't believe for one second that the game is unplayable or not enjoyable. I call bull****!

I really regret some of my own impatience around 24, which ended up great, so I'm not going to lecture anyone about 25 but.. it's clear this is a yearly, evolutionary process. Would be fine to enter later. I quite like the changes and it is in no way unplayable.

I admit I'm confused about the interface complaints, 24 felt more noticeable to me, and I liked them. My brain is adjusting to more bars I suppose.

No, the indentation is not even a thing. I turned it off and even when on didn't matter.

I am referring to the overall color scheme of the bars and some other visual things.

My biggest bug issue is that draft pick comp for unsigned draftees. The recent patch was supposed to fix that and I still am not receiving comp for players that turn down offers.

Also something still seems off with pitchers in the game, especially for the draft pool in the real MLB league. The draft pool for 2024 does not have a single pitcher being selected in the first round. I somewhat follow MLB drafts and can't remember a single draft that didn't have at least 1 pitcher taken in the first round.

The draft pick comp should be fixed in the official patch today.

On the pitchers, there are a couple things here.

One, the AI does tend to favor hitters a bit too much early in the first round right now. This follows real life trends where this has been happening more, but it's very likely too much right now, and it's in on our list of things to tweak a bit in the next patch.

Second, for the 2024 draft, this draft is unusually hitter heavy at the top and especially considered potentially a historically bad draft for HS pitchers.

I tried to find the link and can't do it, but as I've been doing research, I just read a recent article that mentioned that some scouts think there may not be any HS pitchers taken in the first round this year, which has never happened before.

So when you combine the very poor HS pitcher class in 20224 with the AI a bit too much favoring hitters at the moment, it can lead to a bit of an atypical result.

Lukas - That makes sense with the draft currently, no question. Can you tell me what exactly occurs when you increase the draft players per rounds? I think the default is 30rds worth for 20rds. If I increase that to 40 for example, do those duplicate a random swathe of talent? Last year I'd have told you, def yes. This year, I'm not sure, so I could be wrong about last.

I am interested in this too, as at default, i feel like there aren't enough players left that don't get drafted, but if adding more rounds produces more top tier players, i wouldn't want that as already there are tons of 80 rated players in 24.

I'm only 30 or so games into season 1 of my sim, but my initial impressions are the game play itself is very similar to previous versions. And I don't mean that in a bad way at all. To me the game has been very enjoyable and very solid compared to previous versions....I really don't have any complaints at all right now.

That said, it sounds like the majority of the complaints so far seem to revolve around player development and the draft. Being only 30 games in to season 1, that part of the game has yet to be something I'm dealing with. My hope and assumption is that by the time I get deep enough into the game where prospect development starts to take shape, that should hopefully be all patched up. But for people who sim seasons ahead at a quicker place, I could see that of course giving them a different opinion than what I have.

My personal opinion at the moment though = another very solid release.

Agreed. I manage every inning of every game and this style has allowed me to play every release version as far back as I can remember from day one.

The high cost of relievers you may ask? My game is imported and a simple sort of league wide singings of RP shows me I have two that are over the top. Once patched, as we are now, I can edit those salaries, if I so choose, to match other top relievers and move on from there.
