Fictional League Start Preference
When playing fictional leagues, do you just start playing with no stats or do you sim maybe 20 years and then take a team?
Not sure what I want to do. Last edited by rdomico; 03-21-2024 at 01:20 PM. |

I started my fictional league in 1931 and simmed ahead 40 years. During the sim process, I did a random draw to see which team I got. I didn't want to just choose a team. As it turned out, I ended up with a middle of the pack team that I managed for 5 years before I moved to another team. I'm currently in 1982 and in year 6 of my second team. Simming ahead gives you history and players in your league's HoF. Much better simming ahead in my opinion.

I actually really like starting from year 1 and seeing the league's history "in person".

Do you play 1-pitch? That's how I play with a 130 game sched. The way I play, it takes me a full 2 months to get in a season. So, if I played steady, at best I would get 6 seasons in a year. Which by my estimation would take 4 years before I would even have anybody considered for the HoF. It would take years to get that history I can sim overnight. Food for thought. |

I will typically start from day 1. I like the feeling of being able to scroll through the history and think... I know who that is... for almost every player.

I like to play from day 1, but instead of picking a team and then making picks in the inaugural draft, what I did most recently was let the AI make all the picks and then I just picked the player I thought was the coolest, while trying to ignore the strength of any team as a whole, and then I acted as the team's owner. I like it because it's somewhat random and I'm not likely to easily get bored. I'm not likely to get a great team as I normally would from drafting the initial players, but I'm probably also not likely to get a terrible team either. And even if I do, I'll have at least 1 player I'm interested in to build off of.
The best part is I now find myself in a position that I don't normally find myself in. We're at the trade deadline and have the 2nd best record in the (12-team) league with probably the best offense, but we only have 2 decent SPs. If even just 1 of them goes down, I think we're cooked. We didn't start the season with that great of a rotation to begin with, and then 1 guy went down with an injury, the youngest guy didn't perform as we had hoped, and the AI traded the other young guy who was performing well for a reliever (a good reliever, but still, I think a good young SP is more valuable than a good reliever). We badly need to shore up our rotation, but I also don't really want to give up any of our prospects as our team is a bit on the old side. And I'm big on depth so normally I wouldn't even be close to being in a situation like this. Meanwhile, we just lost our starting catcher to what might amount to a season ending injury. It's frustrating, but at the same time I love it.

I start by simming one year at a time in commissioner mode (usually a month at a time or to the next major event). At the end of each season I manually select the award winners (you could even do the all-star teams if you wanted to). This let's you get to know the best players as you go. I also shortlist the top draft picks every year and any players I find interesting. After enough history has built up I'll create a new manager and take over the worst team in the league.

I like to micro manage and play every game every pitch, so I always start with a clean slate and watch the league develop and the record books develop over time

I play each game in 1-pitch mode for my team, and it still seems like it takes a while to run a season. |

I pick a team, then sim through the first month of the season. After that I play out perhaps one game per series.
