Hey friends,
after the launch today, could you please do me a favor and test the FPS limit settings? The default is "No limitation", but this can cause some laptops to run a bit hot, so we'd like to gather some feedback wether we want to keep this default or use 120 or even 60 instead. The no limit setting certainly produces the smoothest animations, but could you please let us know how the other settings look on your system and provide some info (like CPU, GPU and RAM)? Thanks! Here's where you can find the setting: Game Settings disalog -> "3D" tab -> "Max. Frames per Second". |

I've noticed that shutting off audience animations is no longer an option. This was something that seemed to help reduce/eliminate crashes for me during live game play, so I'm a little nervous there. I have set detail to simplify, at least.

11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700K @ 3.60GHz
RAM 32 GB GForce RTX 3070 60 and above are fine, anything below that is choppy. Last edited by Bluenoser; 03-12-2024 at 02:36 PM. |

If you have a midrange+ GPU you'll probably want to set a frame rate limit (ideally your monitor refresh rate) otherwise you'll likely get a high frame rate with no actual benefit at the cost of increased work for your GPU, which means higher temps and fan noise than necessary.
YMMV

I often have a problem with my laptop overheating, so much so that I have a program, Core Temp, alert me when it gets too hot (I set the threshold at 95, the max temp for my CPU is 105), and yeah, OOTP even just at 120fps was putting my laptop above 100 for me. The good news is 60fps looks fine IMO. 30fps looks bad however.
Thanks for pointing this setting out to me! I used to just turn off my laptop for awhile. Now I can just turn down that setting. My specs: Lenovo P14s Gen1 (AMD) AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U with integrated Radeon Graphics 16GB soldered Memory Windows 11 Home 64-bit

I'll try it at 240hz when I get home on my 4080 mobile.

No shot your laptop has a 240hz screen?

Yes. If you want to see it, here's the link: https://shop.asus.com/us/rog/90nr0d0...60-g814ji.html
But mine has 32GB RAM and the 4080. |

I'm gathering from this thread that I should set this speed to whatever the lowest setting to avoid laptop problems? I only play playoff games, so mainly do not use the animations, yet the computer often gets too hot and the fan too noisy. Thanks.

Beyond that, you might want to look into what the max temp for your CPU is and if your laptop is frequently approaching that temp you should probably look into ways to counter that as overheating your CPU will affect its performance and possibly even its lifespan. Most people's computers are probably fine, but if it feels too hot, then maybe it is. EDIT: I realize I failed to really answer your question. If you don't ever use animations and your computer gets hot, then, yeah, turn it to the lowest setting.

That's the key. Trying to let your GPU output more frames when your monitor (or cable for that matter) cannot display it is wasting energy. To answer the question that 20_range had though, you should set it to the lowest FPS value that you find tolerable. Your MAX should be what your monitor's refresh rate (rated in mhz). Your Min should be above 60 as that is what is recognizable by the human eye. What Markus is asking is if there is a noticable difference between 60 and 75, or 75 and 144...or in the most decked out rigs is there a difference in terms of smoothness of the animations between 144 and 240 (again, assuming your GPU, cable, and monitor are all actually rated that high).

It's still there in the settings, under "Audience Detail" simply select "Simplified".

To add a little more, you cannot change that in-game while it's in progress, but you can change it in the File->Settings. It's on the game page to show you what value you have selected.

I'm trying to understand this. Is this for people with laptops? Because I have a desktop and a popup window tells me my fps is 24 and I should consider lowering it. The lowest setting I see is 30. When I tried that, it wasn't very good looking. Just looked sluggish to me. I put it back to the default, no limit, and it's much nicer that way.

I was able to test with my laptop last night. The highest choice was 144 and on my 240hz screen it looked smooth. Obviously it always has the weird animations, but I don't think that is due to screen refresh.

But you always want your gpu and computer to output the most frames possible even if it's higher then your screens refresh rates. This lowers lag which in a real time game is the difference between a kill or dying. This is why the Counterstrike players want over 400 fps as an example. And this goes for any real time game. If it is a turn based game you lose a lot of benefit after 120 but it still minimizes lag and improves that scrolling smoothness over the world or maps or what have you. Ootp might be different since it is static aka no live action requiring player input but grab an old iphone and compare it to a 120hz iphone and you will notice night and day just when it comes to scrolling through text. Ootp probably doesn't suffer from lag issues because the nature of the game. But there is a ton of scrolling so everyone probably should be shooting for 120. |
