RIP Jose DeLeon

Died of cancer a few days ago. He was most notable as the player traded to reclaim Bobby Bonilla after the Pirates foolishly exposed him to the Rule 5 draft. Both had good careers, but it would have been nice to have them both on the Pirates. Who knows? Perhaps DeLeon would have been good enough to get the Pirates past the Braves in the '92 playoffs and convince Barry to stay with the Pirates.

I wonder who the player was they protected from Rule 5 instead of Bonilla.

A 60s pitcher, don't remember who, opined that you have to be a decent pitcher for them to keep sending you out to lose that many games.

Hard to go 86-119, with a 1.2 WHIP, and an ERA+ of 102. He was certainly better than his record.

He was a Cardinal in 1990, and lost another 19 games. He would be sailing along, winning 2-1, and give up a two run bomb, late. Happened all year long.

And I will always remember as the victim of Mike Torrez's greatest start as a Met, on July 31st, 1983, as the last-place Mets finished off a double-header sweep of the contending Pirates, with DeLeon's 9 scoreless innings no match for Torrez's 11 shutout frames, and the Mets getting the only run when Mookie Wilson (still steaming from Atlanta's Rick Camp plunking him mid-week, which set off a bench-clearing brawl) singled, was bunted to second, waited as the Bucs walked Keith Hernandez to set up the DP, and came flying around from second becaue George Foster's grounder was too slow to let Dale Berra turn two.
