Selecting which pitches, pitchers are allow to throw
I can throw every pitch. (granted, my best one probably tops out at 23 on a 1-100 scale)
I guarentee you every MLB Pitcher can throw every pitch too and they should have a rating for every pitch type. The question is "How good" can they throw it, and should they be throwing it in a big league game. I would like the ability to select which pitches, my pitchers are allowed to throw (or have a pitching coach auto do it, if you dont want to micro manage). Even put a % of how to distribute the pitches. You can even put in a variable with your catchers Catching ability rating or the pitchers or catchers inteligence, as to how closely he follws your instructions. Got a stud releiver, with 2 80+ pitches, but you need him to start a game. When he is pitching 1 inning, all he needs is those 2 stellar pitches. But when he starts, let him start including his 40 change up into the mix, maybe even his 35 slider set to 5%, just to give the guess hitters something to think about. Maybe have an internal setting, so the the more a hitter see's a pitch from a pitcher, the greater his ability is to hit it. (this screams "adaptability rating") Keep throwing that 95 rated fastball, eventaully hitters are going to clue into it. Sure he can get past 1 inning with just the heater, but the 2nd time through the lineup, you need to start mixing things up. So better start mixing in some of the lesser pitches if he needs to go a few innings. |

The game already essentially maximizes this for the pitcher (i.e. it assumes they best know how to utilize their arsenal...or I guess you could say that the Movement rating is determining how well they are utilizing it).
Starting pitchers will need to rely on more on their "secondary" pitches than relief pitchers (which is why the Stuff rating changes between those two roles). I get the want for this to be part of the users' decision-making but that would take some major changes to the fundamental aspects of how the game is currently designed. |

Yeah… right now pitches can do nothing but help a player in some way. At worst, the game doesn’t use them (as when a player pitches in relief for instance). Ideally I’d like to see each pitch have something like the following:
Stuff - the current pitch rating, basically how good the pitch is at getting strikes. Control - yeah, individually for each pitch, and to me this should go up or down a lot from one game to the next. Some days you can control your curve, some you can’t. A left-right movement and an up-down movement rating that determines splits (the higher the left/right, the more the split) and the “up”/down determines how many flies vs grounders and also a rating of 0 is probably the worst HR allowed mark (to account for “rising” fastballs that induce pop ups but not necessarily more HRs. You’d still want a pitcher to have a separate control and movement rating, or something like that, that measures how much a guy will try to nibble and so on. All this would as you note require a pretty huge revamp of the way pitching works. A lot of players would just play differently.
