Beta Utility: OOTP World Editor

Since editing XML can be a bit daunting, I made this to make it a bit simpler.

0.1.2-beta - Initial Release
  • Edit existing world_default.xml files
  • Create compatible xml files from scratch, with an initial wizard interface
  • Import CSV lists for quickly bringing in larger quantities of data - templates are included with the app!
  • Move things around, either through menus or via drag-and-drop. Want to move Afghanistan to South America? Want to move Detroit to Argentina? Go for it!
  • Automatically translates relevant fields into Korean using the Bing Translate API. Obvioulsy, this is not going to be perfect.
  • Automatically keeps track of IDs in the various categories so you don't need to worry about winding up with, say, two cities with the same ID
  • All nodes have context menus for quick access to various editing options
THIS IS A BETA APPLICATION, DO NOT EDIT THE ORIGINAL WORLD_DEFAULT.XML, MAKE A COPY AND WORK WITH THAT INSTEAD!!!!

Version 0.1.3-beta has been released!

What's New
  • Initial release for Linux
What's Fixed
  • Fixed a typo that was causing the "African" percentage in the Ethnicities to be omitted when saving.
  • XML now saves with an empty "CITIES" tag if a state contains no cities - while this is valid as far as OOTP is concerned, it causes an error when opening the file in the World Editor.
  • Fixed a cosmetic bug that was allowing the bulk import progress bar to show its last state when starting a new bulk import.
  • A few other small bug fixes

Just as a note, I came across an issue involving the world_default.xml in QuestDog's Complete World Names Database 2.0 that causes the World Editor to hang. Specifically, line 38736 which is an extraneous / malformed "SECOND_NATIONS" closing tag. Just delete that line from QuestDog's XML file and the World Editor will load it properly.

Really really enjoying this and wanted to thank you for creating it. Maybe more of a niche app since I think most people go for the graphics ones, but I love this and can't stop tweaking my fictional world to actually start up a game!

Thanks again!

0.1.4-beta has been released

What's New
  • Added ability to select multiple nodes, although it's only really useful if you're dragging and dropping them.
What's Fixed
  • Fixed a typo where I had "Ethnicities" spelled with two h's.

This looks like a great utility. What would I need in order to use this with a Macintosh?

nice enough to include a Mac version. Go to his link and look for the .dmg file. Download it and install!

love the app....
is there a way to add a feature for city/year and related news for combinations?

i have this hankering to more robust pbp and daily newspaper recaps that can integrate real (or imaginary) events

I don't think any of that is even possible.

Casual question for you eriqjaffe, Is this something you are going to develop more? I love this utility so much and am just curious what you had in mind with it? It really makes modding the game world so accessible

Probably not much, because personally I can't think of much else I would want it to be able to do.

First of all, thanks for making this, it's been very useful to me personally!

Second, I would like for the option to select multiple cities for deletion.
I am editing Mexico in the database to have every municipality in game, but some states have more cities in the database than they should so it would be a real time saver if I could select say 20 or 30 cities and just hitting delete once rather than having to go one by one.

Once again, thanks for your work in creating the utility and others that I have personally made use of!

I'm trying to make all the US states their own nations, is there anyway to do this without everyone US born player currently in game to having their hometown be "unknown" after making these moves?

Second question is , is there a way to easily make "states" into Nations? Is there a way to just copy the information from one states and then paste into another? Doesn't seem to be an "export" option for states/nations anywhere i can see.

Also the game only uses city populations when making decisions right? There is no need to really put that info anywhere when creating new countries?

Also I'm trying to figure out what the hard-coded ML origins setting does and can't really see any difference in testing.

How is the CSV file for cities supposed to be set up? I keep getting a "this does not appear to be the proper CSV file" when I try to add cities from a file. I have it saved as a CSV and I believe I have all the proper data needed, but I keep getting this error. I am sorry if this is a dumb question, I am not that computer savvy.

I have figured it out, so disregard my question

Type Error?

First off, I'm glad there's a utility for world_default files. I seem to spend more time tinkering with XML files than I do with any other aspect of the game, for whatever reason, so this will make my editing easier.

However, I'm getting an error I don't understand the context of when I try opening the world_default file I want to use. It says:
"TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'id')"

For context, I'm doing the following:
1. Using a modified XML file (Dogzilla's World Name Database 2.0)
2. Using a folder other than the default database folder.

Every time I load it from my folder, I get that error. I have no difficulty opening the default XML from the default folder, though.

I would think this would be caused by the XML database being made in a prior OOTP, but yet a second modified XML I've tried that's based off OOTP 25 does the same thing.

What am I doing wrong?

Editing the XML files in a code editor is always the better way to manipulate the files how you won't, though I'm not clear on what you're trying to do in all your posts.
