Cincy City Connect Uniforms

Nope, don't care for the Cincinnati REDS city connect jerseys.

Didn't someone realize the team name is REDS... yep, that's REDS.

Why they used black is beyond me.

The colors are wrong and there is lousy contrast.

Sorry, folks, EC is just an old traditionist.

Still, I know a lot of you guys would be interested.

I think you are missing the point about the City Connect Jerseys.

It has NOTHING to do with the nickname and EVERYTHING to do with the city name.

See San Diego, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Washington, both Chicago teams, etc.

City connection items are fine... I have no problem with that... in fact, I love it when nicknames and colors are based on town history, culture, industry and region, but they should have used the team's color...which is primarily red... especially, when the team name is Reds.

I’m down with the Mariners throwback city connect unis but to me the two best are the Rockies and the Padres, neither of which have anything to do with throwbacks or anything but city stuff (I believe the Rockies’ CC unis are patterned after their state license plates). I don’t mind the idea but my issue is that they’re kind of bland and they don’t really stand for anything outside of “the future”, which, I don’t know if that’s bright and rosy for a Rust Belt city. The Chicago Bulls had a black city jersey a couple years ago and it was fantastic because they modeled it after one of the iconic skyscrapers in the Loop complete with Art Deco script.

Probably the cap logo is the best thing and that’s an obscure reference to their 1919 World Series Champions unis.

Houston has a sweet CC uniform in my opinion

Hadn't Cincy worn black alternate jerseys before? I know I have one in my Ootp jersey folder.

Yep, they first wore black for black's sake back in the late 90's.

I'm with Eugene on this. BFBS looked awful then and it looks awful now. Regardless of all the marketing mumble-jumble, these are no different than all the Mother's day, Fourth of July, Veteran's Day, and G.I. Joe tripe they trot out each year - to sell merchandise. Because they know that there are plenty of suckers willing to spend $200 for a polyester shirt imported from a third-world country.

I guess in that sense the red and black is appropriate as it well represents the blood and toil MLB is exploiting for low wages.

I don't think black and red look bad, it's a great color combination in my opinion. Black is a good accent color. Especially with the pinstripes on that jersey, I think the jerseys they wore in the late 90s to early 2000s look good. But historically, Cincinnati has worn red with blue but I think that was in the 1920s-1930's...

I have no problem with black as a secondary color.

My point is that the team is called the Reds... they are not called the Blacks.

If the jersey is white, then the team name should be in red.

If the jersey is gray (away), then the team name should be red.

That's all I'm saying.

Yep, EC sees red when I see Cincy in black.

But the issue here is not whether red and black look good together, its just that they have no historical roots in the Reds' vestiary. The Reds briefly wore black in the late 90s because of a fad and they were late to the party on that one.

The Pirates and Orioles look great with black as one of their main colors. Well, its been a part of their long uniform history so that's appropriate.

Not so with the Reds. Coupled with the fact that these foreign-made shirts and hats are supposed to celebrate an American city is both ironic and sad.

Yeah that's true. With the city connect jerseys, I don't think an all red jersey compared to an all black jersey would look good but yeah there should be more red in that jersey.

I mean the RED SOX city connect colors are based off of the Boston Public System.

In my opinion the Boston Red Sox city connect is just about the worse set.
Yep, I know very well that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"... we all have our likes and dislikes... "one man's treasure is another man's trash".

I understand why they picked Blue and Yellow... I think the colors might be connected to the Boston Marathon, but not sure..

The Red Sox should have basically used Red as the primary color and tried some way to add in the Blue and Yellow in a secondary way.

That might have been tough to do.

EC it seems like you're missing the conceptual ideas with these jerseys. It's just coincidence when they use the team's actual colors like they did with the White Sox. The only priority in these jerseys is connecting to something that the city is known for

Yeah, Boston is fine. If anything I think the Ms whiffed on setting up something truly city connected, although they’ve done Rainiers stuff in the past and even the short lived Negro Leagues team so a throwback to the 70s was OK too I guess. To me the teams that really did poorly are the ones who didn’t really do anything like the Angels. Sure LA has more to offer than more plays on angeldom. A Hollywood Stars style throwback would have been great, as would just something tied in directly to Tinseltown and Hollywood culture (in fact that would have been truer to what MLB wanted teams to try to do).

San Diego’s, which are awesome, have zero to do with padres or previous Pads colors or previous SD minor league teams or anything like that. That’s kind of why they work so well IMO.

As a Red Sox fan, they've grown on me - and I'm thrilled now that they are very associated (font too!) with the colors of the Boston Marathon and that those colors are radically different that the navy/red/white ones. Go big or go home, say I! Also, the Marathon, Patriot's Day and the Sox have always been intertwined but that increased a thousand-fold after 2013's bombing, "Our F'ing City" speech by Ortiz, and the World Series triumph. When not wearing their City Connects that home weekend, they wear the traditional whites - but with "Boston" script replacing the Red Sox one on the front. I like that too.

OK... maybe I missed the point.

Sometimes EC is not the sharpest tool in the woodshed.

Good post.

Thank you.

If it don't bother a Red Sox fan and all the Bostonians, that makes it OK with EC, too.

Sorry, I get hung up on traditional colors and traditional jerseys too often.
