If you could own an MLB franchise...
Which one would you choose? My favorite team is the Chicago Cubs, but if I could choose an MLB team to own, it would be the Angels. First thing I would do is announce that we're going back to being the California Angels. No more of this "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" nonsense. That's gone.
The next thing I do is announce that we're going back to the Angels logo and uniforms from the 1980s as our primary home/road jerseys. We would keep the current home jersey as an alternate and have a new alternate road jersey. Then, I would hire an Executive VP of Baseball Operations to oversee the front office. There are many people who would be considered, but the name at the top of my list would be Josh Byrnes currently with the Los Angeles Dodgers. I would also hire a new manager and replace Phil Nevin. Again, many people would be considered, but the name at the top of my list is Joe Espada current bench coach of the Houston Astros. I'd also bring back guys like Rod Carew into the organization who have been alienated from the Arte Moreno regime. Last but not least, I would want to get a new stadium built to replace Angels Stadium. What say you? Last edited by RubeBaker; 04-22-2023 at 01:28 PM. |

I would own my home town team, the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland is a great sports city. The stadium is centrally located and is easily reached by Rapid Transit trains coming from the east or west. The stadium is a stone's throw from Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, where the Cavs play. And it's within easy walking distance of East 4th Street, which has become a wonderful entertainment district thanks to a number of new restaurants.

The Yankees, then I could sell them for between 10-12 billion and then buy the franchise I want.
Or 2 or 3 franchises I want. And probably have some money left over to actually invest into my team. |

Instead of going with the obvious with me, I searched for an alternative answer. It was this, and I will leave it short so as to encourage you to ponder what I mean: An MLB team that has not sold its stadium naming rights. (Yet.)

Well, always been a Red Sox fan but not the team I'd want to own. Much rather be in a place where the media spotlight doesn't shine so bright.
Oakland or San Diego. Would need a new stadium built in a decent location if I took the A's though. Would have no interest in moving the team. With a new ball park and a real desire to build a winner, I think Oakland would be a great team to own. I'd bring back guys from the past too as ambassadors, Fingers, Jackson, Eck, Stewart. Yup, Green n Gold would be a fun team to watch and root for again.

My Metsies, of course. The greatest city in the world represented by the greatest sport in the world, and importanlty, a National League team, where they play real baseball instead of that DH crap. Nine men play offense, nine men play defense, everybody has to play a complete game…
…oh, wait. It's not 2019 any more. Well, then, the Mets just for the resale value. (Yes, the Yankees would bring me more cash. But some things just aren't worth it.) |

The Astros so I could run them into the ground. I’d trade their good non cheaty players to the Mariners first of course.

The Cardinals. I would then lower ticket prices by about half, and do the same for food.

Okay, before I sold the Mets I'd rename the stadium so that our shared communal experience, the place that brings us together and provides us with joy isn't AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR A MOTHER-FORNICATING BANK THAT STEALS MONEY FROM WORKING PEOPLE.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph and other fictional characters…still so damn pissed about it. I mean, I can sort of laugh about the LA Kings playing in an arena named for a flat-out scam ("Cryptocurrency! Money that doesn't actually exist! It's gold, Jerry! Gold!")…but they're not the Mets. Name the park for Terrell Hansen or Jay Kleven or even Carlos Baerga. Name it for the area or something out of mythology. But to shill for Citi when there are families that are homeless because Citi stole their houses through mortgage fraud and foreclosure…gah! Oh, and I'd put a clause in contract forbidding renaming the team, the ballpark or any part thereof after any corporate entity in perpetuity. Too bad if it costs you a cheap buck down the road. Do you want the team or not? |

I think I’d rename Minute Maid Park back to Enron Field. Maybe have an NFT cosponsor.

People gatekeeping how people in other states define their teams is… weird.

MLB Stadiums named for the team: Yankee Stadium Dodger Stadium Angel Stadium Nationals Park MLB Stadium named for ownership Rogers Centre (Blue Jays) MLB Stadiums named for former owners Kauffman Stadium (Royals) Busch Stadium (Cardinals) Wrigley Field (Cubs) Yes, there are commercial products named Busch and Wrigley (and I believe Kauffman Pharmaceuticals is still going), but that's not the point of the name; it's a connection to the team's heritage. Fans can remember 1982 and 1984 and 1985, when Busch and Wrigley and Kauffman owned the teams and led them to success (only a division flag for the Lovable Losers…but it's the Cubs, after all). MLB Stadiums named for the geographic area Fenway Park (Red Sox) Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum (Athletics) MLB Stadium named for the team and the geographic area Oriole Park at Camden Yards That's 11 teams that honor something other than whatever corporate scum threw five bucks their way. As opposed to "Bend Over for the Big Banks Field" or wherever the Mets are playing. To paraphrase Billy Joel, it's still Shea Stadium to me. Last edited by Amazin69; 04-25-2023 at 12:32 AM. |

If I could own a team - it would not be my favorite team ( Yankees ) ...
I would likely select the St. Louis Cardinals ---- BUT if I could own ( Tampa Bay ) and relocate the team ( or it be an expansion team ) ---- it would be Nashville , Tn -- stadium located south along I-24.

The Cardinals, just so DeWittless could be out of the picture and I could fire Mozeliak and actually spend some money on pitching.

Love seeing my franchise go from completely being ignored to feeling the hate flow through.

I also live in Northern California and am familiar with the NorCal/SoCal rivalry so it's laughable when the Warriors have the moniker Golden State when they are literally surrounded by three other NBA franchises in the state.

OT from the above, here are the remaining NFL Stadium Names that aren't Completely Disgusting:
Named for a former Coach: Lambeau Field (Green Bay) Named for a former Coach and Owner: Paul Brown Stadium (Cincinnati) Named for Ownership: Ford Field (Detroit) Named for Local History Soldier Field (Chicago) partial credit for not completely obliterating the original name [Gambling Addiction] SuperDome (New Orleans) [I've never even heard of this corporation] Field at Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City) I mean, 4 honest names and 2 partial credit out of 32 isn't exactly great, but it's better than the NBA/NHL, at least. |
