OOTP 23 Skins

Is it possible to modify/create custom skins for OOTP 23? I really like the default dark skin, but I find that the bold white text on dark background gives me eye strain. If I could just change the font color or make it so that the default text isn't bolded that'd be great.

It is possible. I'm working on a skin right now.

Go to File > Workshop Central > Open Workshop. That will open up Steam. Find the skin you want to change, click on it, then click "+ Subscribe". It might take awhile to download. Find your data/skins folder, open the subfolder of the skin you downloaded and delete the skin.bin file. Go to File > Workshop Central, click on the skin you want to change and then click on "This item is downloaded... re-install it". Then once it's done, go back to the skin folder and start changing things.

The defaults.cfg file does have some font stuff in it. And colours/colours.cfg has colours in it, but it's not well documented what each line does so you'll just have to test each color code and then try to match it to what you see in the game.

Unfortunately from there you're on your own as I'm just now learning this stuff too.

EDIT: You could try the other fonts available via Settings on the start screen, but re-reading your post it sounds like what you want to do is edit 1 or both of those cfg files.

Okay, I learned some more things.

To change the default screen colours you need to change the DEFAULT_PRIMARY_COLOUR and DEFAULT_SECONDARY_COLOUR in colours/colours.cfg. I recommend picking a hue you like and then taking the default colours and just change the hue while keeping the saturation and value (brightness). You can figure this out by using GIMP's color picker tool, just click on HSV, input the default colour codes, change the hue and then copy and paste the html code. To change the colours of the dialogs, you have to change the hue of the images in style_sets>dialog_background. That takes awhile, but it's worth it. You can easily change image hues in GIMP by going to Colours>Hue-Saturation>and adjust the Hue to the same #. Then you probably want to change the hue of the logo and background images in the images folder.

But before you do all that, copy the folder of the skin you like and work on that folder only.

Also, once you have the skin downloaded and installed, it won't update your changes until after you delete skin.bin and reload OOTP. EDIT: See posts 13 & 14 for clarification on the timing of when to delete skin.bin if you're making changes while the game is running. The key seems to be just not delete skin.bin while you have the game running and using that skin. Either delete it when the game isn't running, or delete it while using a different skin.

I really like how mine turned out. EDIT: I uploaded it. My first ever workshop contribution.

Hey kq would you be able/willing to upload your skin folder and bin file here for those of us not on Steam?

Sure!

I have no idea if it needs Steam to work, let us know either way.

And if it looks like it's working for the most part, just with some issues, try deleting the skin.bin and reloading OOTP. I had to do that maybe 4 times before it seemed perfect.

thanks! I can confirm it works without Steam...though I'm on 2 deletes/reloads and getting about half of the screens to show the right color scheme. Weird behavior LOL

Yeah, there must be something buggy about the skin reloading programming, but keep trying.

I'm at the point where there's only 1 small glitchy area among some tabs, but I noticed that shows up even with the default dark skin.

EDIT: I'm attaching a pic of the glitch (using the default dark skin). If someone has an idea how to fix it, let me know. I think the game is just telling that file to move too far because it only shows up once you go to the options of an in-play game, not when you start a game.

Sorry to necro a dead thread. kq76, in what order do I need to delete skin.bin, install ootp skin in Workshop Center, and make the changes to the .cfg file?

I think I’m doing something out of order.

I haven't done another skin since and my memory isn't too good, but I'd try to follow the order from posts #2 and 3. Re-reading that it sounds like you have to download it first, delete skin.bin and then re-install it. Then whenever you make changes, delete skin.bin and reload OOTP. I know, that doesn't seem to make sense, but I remember it was kind of tricky somehow. Maybe koohead or someone else who has done one recently can confirm. Maybe you're just not shutting down OOTP and reloading it after deleting skin.bin?

You can make your changes at any time just realize you will see no results until the bin file is recreated. The only way I have figured out how to get the bin file to generate is to restart the game. so...make changes, delete skin.bin, start game. If you happen to be in the game while you are making changes, then you should be making changes, exit game, delete skin.bin, restart game.

You don't have to exit the game. You can also just switch to another skin, delete skin.bin, then switch back to your edited skin and it will rebuild the skin.bin file.
