still haven't bought
So, I have bought ootp since 2016 (may go back more but 16 is on an old PC) and every year it seems like not long after I buy it goes to half price. I always figured that was okay as I had already played for a while, so it was worth it. Well, this year I decide to wait until prices are cut in half and it's still full price. My question is: is the 23 version better the reason for it still being full price?

Not sure if I'm supposed to not say this here but... it's pretty cheap in Epic. If the cost makes a difference to you, that's a good place to check. Of course, if it doesn't really make a difference to you, then it's probably better for the devs to get it straight from them.

More like $9.99.
I always wait until there's a sale for that amount, normally around Xmas. So I'm always a year behind the current version (I just finished my 2022 league season using OOTP 22). |

I would purchase it now. It's a very solid product at this point. Things were a bit Shakey in the early going, but I can honestly say now that many of the changes are working the way they were originally intended, and some of the technical snafus have been squashed...it's a great version of OOTP.

Get the game at full price and enjoy it... if money is truly a problem, I will be glad to help you get it.
I have bought OOTP since OOTP 3 every year... it has been my experience that it gets better every year... I have never gone back to a previous version. I play a simple game... fictionals only... did not like to see Tom Seaver, Joe DiMaggio and other immortals play poorly... which occasionally happened... I don't like the business of baseball... money has ruined the game... so I don't use financials... I just create my league and watch it unfold... I let the AI handle everything... but I do refine the stats' output to keep them where I like them to be... 1950s baseball. I always pay full price... even when I was on the Beta Team... I did this in gratitude to Markus and the OOTP Team so they would make the most money off of their great game. $40 was never a problem for me... that is only 10 cents a day for a wonderful game that I have truly enjoyed for over 20 years... it is now better than ever. I bought OOTP23 when it was released... played a few games... liked it... and then put it on the shelf... I will wait until the final patch to convert my leagues to it... that way the game is as good as that version will get. The final patch used to come in July... the last few years it has been as late as December... I really appreciate Markus' dedication to refining the game and making each version as good as he can do it. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-17-2022 at 11:42 AM. |

I do appreciate those who are sensitive to players who may be on limited incomes. I have gone on record as buying both the Mac and PC versions, full price, so that I can have the flexibility to play both on my laptop (like now, on vacation) and my Mac Mini desktop at home. (I’m technically on fixed income, pension and Social Security, plus a bit of consulting; but I can afford it, thankfully.). For some, that’s a chunk of change. We all have budgets. And while it can seem unlikely that a true fan would lack the money for dinner out to splurge on OOTP instead, the reality is some can’t afford dinner out. Like EC, I would never want to see someone miss out on a new season, for lack of resources.

It’ll probably be half price during the playoffs if you can truly wait.

Tell them to hold on for the anticipated whopping 11% increase in Social Security payments. For those without pension or other income, that should help. It worries me (as a nearly-retired person) that this increase will actually contribute to inflation by injecting more money into the economy, but that’s a worry for tomorrow. At least gas is back down to $3 bucks.

I figured I'd piggyback on this as it's a 'should I buy' thread...
Did they make any changes to the coaching this year? It always did my head in that the AI knew how good the pitching/hitting coaches were and I didn't. I was really optimistic that 22 would resolve all that, but if anything coaches were made worse (forget what all the issues were but one was that I couldn't re-assign people to higher level teams). I'm generally done with the franchise and I've been pretty disillusioned about the direction of solo, historical/fictional play in OOTP the last few years but that's been beaten to death. At this point though I'm a one issue buyer... has coaching been fixed/improved since last year that you guys are aware of? By that I mean, can I see how good the coaches are AND can I move them around in the same way I moved them around in pre-ootp22 versions? |

I don't think the coaching was improved, I don't think your specific concerns are accurate though. It shows coach quality and lets you promote coaches to higher level positions, and it did in 22 as well.

No it didn't in 22 unless they fixed it. There was also a thread about it. You couldn't promote minor league staff to the major leagues. They did start showing how good the coaches were (which they were already doing before OOTP16 or so and for some reason they stopped), but the problems that were added made the whole system worse overall.
In my leagues there were also a lot of good coaches who wouldn't accept any position and just sat there unemployed for years and years. Here's the thread: http://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/s...d.php?t=330963 Most players don't seem to worry about this, but to me this stuff is a big deal as player development is a major part of the game. Anyway, it looks like this still hasn't been addressed and isn't on the agenda so that's that. Last edited by One Post Wonder; 10-01-2022 at 10:09 AM. |

I'm telling you, it's been addressed. It may have been in a patch in 22, but I'm pretty sure I promoted staff in 22, and I'm 100% certain you can promote staff in 23. Just the other day I promoted my AAA manager to replace my MLB manager who had retired. If this is what your sticking point is, have no fear and buy the game with confidence! It has indeed been fixed.

Well, that's good to hear. In that event I'll have to check out 23 during the Steam Thanksgiving sale. Thanks!
(off topic, I wish they'd bring back that 'thanks' feature in the forum where you could thank posts with a button. I thought that was useful) |

IMO the new games are roster updates, with maybe a few qol features sprinkled in here and there. It’s best to just wait until they have their sale if you want to get the bang for your buck.
