Hello all,

I would like to let you know in advance about how the Cleveland franchise nickname change affects OOTP 23. Of course we have all the new 2022 Guardians assets in the game, as expected.

However, the official stance of the Guardians franchise is that the previous nickname "Indians" must not be used in any MLB licensed products, which includes OOTP 23. Of course we have to abide to these guidelines. So, when you play a historical game, the Cleveland teams (plus their minor league affiliates that were called "Indians") have been renamed to "Guardians".

Bah. The very first thing I'm going to do is rename that club to the name they should have picked: Cleveland Spiders

Yes, cause erasing history is not cringe and dangerous at all, what a time to be alive.

This news is a bit of a bummer, I don't like corporations dictacing what we can do or not with their branding, since it's so steeped in pop culture. A lesser case is Manchester United banning, since Football Manager 2021, players from sharing their logo in graphics mods.

So... yeah.
As jokerhusky1129 mentionned, I hope we'll be able to mod that back without Guardians lawyers losing their **** on the community.

Nope. As far as the game is concerned it's all just text, hex numbers for color, and associated .png files. They can be anything you want them to be.

Which means any game using the likeness of MLB in association with the MLBPA CANNOT use the Cleveland Indians moniker. See above in retrospect to the registered trademark. Don't like it? Just buy OOTP22 and stick with it.

The Spiders sucked as a team historically and had no modern tie to Cleveland. We didn't want it. Most people here are fine with Guardians already from what I have seen.

First off, I'm not against the change at all.

But, as a historical player I have to ask, if we have historical expansion turned on and we change the Cleveland franchise to the historically correct nickname, aren't we going to have to do so every year? Have to think based on the way historical operates, OOTP will switch the name to Guardians each offseason.

Fine with me... as long as I can use the correct names of every teams from the beginning in 1871 I'm happy.

This isn't like I ever reached the modern days in any of my game since I bought the game the first time anyway...

What bothers me about such changes is that they tend to be cosmetic efforts, more talking the talk than walking he walk. All for eliminating racist, insulting, demeaning images that hurt people; but would hope that is followed up by fair treatment and an end to discrimination.

Those who refuse to learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. (This is why I was a history major.). It’s hard to learn from the past, when too many examples of prejudice and bigotry have simply been erased. We can’t honestly pretend that there was no segregation, or discrimination, in the past, in sports and in life. The next generation needs to learn from our mistakes and do better.
