Cutting a player off your roster

Ok for people that play franchise, if you have someone signed for let's say 7 years at $12 mil a year, and they are now starting their 5th year, so they have 3 years left on their contract, BUT their ratings took a turn for the worse, went from being worth the $12 mil a year and long contract to now being 33 and their ratings nose diving to being in the 30's...

Now, this player is dead weight, does not want to "be demoted" and your only option is let them waste away and hope for retirement or, release them... How does it hit your budget if you release them? Do they just stay on your budget each year or does it attack your cash? How does releasing a player affect your finances?

TIA!!!

I've wondered this same thing for many years. I hate to admit it, but before playing Challenge Mode, I would cheat and edit their contract to something less painful or if they were old enough, I would force retire them. I've only recently started playing Challenge Mode and I'm sure this is going to come up. My guess is that it all hits the current years budget... but what the impact of that is, I don't know.

I think the game gives you the option to pay all at once or, if you decline on paying it all now you pay it out yearly.

Note I said "I think" but, I am fairly confident this was added within the last few years. Queue someone to come in and tell me I am wrong

This is how it worked the last time I considered/explored doing the same thing. i.e. you had the option as you've outlined.

It looks like I do not get the option of that and it will only allow me to pay the it over a three year time period. So I am guessing its like he is still on the team and paying him but he is sitting at home watching the game.

I have a $310M budget with only a $219M payroll. So it sounds like I should be ok eating that contract over the next 3 years, if it comes down to releasing him.

Thanks for looking into this. It's good to know that this is what I'll soon be facing.

If you have enough budget space, it will give you the option to pay all immediately or spread it out. It counts as "additional expenses" and digs your budget accordingly if it's spread out.

If you don't have the budget remaining to pay it at once, the game will automatically spread it out.

One note - when I've been in that situation, I would try to trade the player before cutting him. Even on the hardest trade setting, I can often find a team that will take him if I retain 90+ percent of his contract (and maybe throw in a fairly meaningless one star prospect). Doing that means you save a little bit of money and if he does retire before the contract ends, it saves you a lot since the contact will disappear from your books at that point. And it might also negate having to pay the buyout if he has an option at the end of his contract.

Yep. Definitely try trading him. You can slowly edge up how much of the contract you'll retain but you should be able to save some money and at least get a prospect or two out of it.

I'm honestly surprised baseball teams have yet to follow the route you see NFL teams make every now and then, which is to say that the trading team adds in value in order to get the other guys to take on the salary. The most notable example of that is the Brock Osweiler to Cleveland deal. I guess one reason why this hasn't happened is that MLB doesn't have the hard salary caps that the NFL does along with all that other money that continues to count against it after a guy is traded or released. That said, we are beginning to see more and more teams chafe at the luxury tax threshold so maybe this will cease to become a thing...

Technically there is no luxury tax right now.

If you retire a player you don't owe them money and they come off the books.

Shouldn't it be up to the player if he retires?

IMO it should be. Had Albert Pujols on my Angels team. He decided he would retire.

It should be but the commissioner can make them an offer they can't refuse.

Well, yah, but.....
2021 was the last year of Pujol's contract anyway, so you were not on the hook for anything after that even if he hadn't retired.
If you took Detroit and had, potentially, four more years of Miggy Cabrera on the books would your opinion possibly be subject to 'reconsideration'?
LOL
Just asking.
