Idea for new tournament format (to encourage more unique teams!)

Okay, so there's this old Jet Li movie called "The One". The premise is that there are hundreds of iterations of each person each living their own life in separate universes, but sharing the same "lifeforce." In the movie, Jet Li plays the hero AND the villain. The villain travels throughout dimensions killing the other versions of himself, and as he does so, he gains a larger share of the "lifeforce" and becomes more powerful.

So here's my tournament idea:

For each iteration of the same "card" present on an active roster, that card's ratings are decreased by 2-3%. If all 32 teams in your diamond tournament are carrying that SE Piazza, he's not going to be so good anymore. This would encourage teams to dig a little deeper to choose players outside of the regular rotations I've seen complained about so much on the forums.

I'm sure it would be a coding nightmare and there's no way this should be a standard PT format, but might produce some fun combos in tournaments.

It’s an interesting thought as it is not restricting people from using their cards, just making common cards less valuable. It would certainly lead to people playing chicken with the use of those common cards. It would certainly take development to facilitate this and I would be concerned about penalizing a small number of people who happen to have the same strong card. Maybe the penalty would only kick in if more than a number of teams have the same card. Something like a minimum of five teams.

I still LOVE the idea of adding two different tournament types:

1. Tournaments that supply you 10 regular packs and you have to make your team out of them - It won't be fair but it will be FUN

2. Same as above but the 10 packs have the same cards ... Still enough variety to team choices and you have to create your team on the fly so can't copy others

There are tons of ways to spice it up... And i personally am ready for some SPICE!

I reckon the people who would win would have super expensive perfects and tournament won special edition cards.

I assume the tournaments would still have the various limitations (e.g. Bronze or lower, points cap, etc).

I think this is a pretty cool idea. I was thinking like a draft-type pool, but the pack thing would be better and more exciting. Obviously, you dont keep the cards.... but maybe create an entry fee to get in and you get to keep them? If it isnt for keeping, the packs could be pumped up a bit on odds.

Would love a TWIPT where Kris rips his packs beforehand to see who he has.... and then watch him blow up when he faces someone who packed a perfect and 2 diamonds.

I like the draft idea. For example, say it's bronze, almost everyone has and wants to draft a 68 Ozzie Smith, but only one team gets to draft him. Well, you better have a few other SSs available to you otherwise you'll be forced to play someone out of position. And if you don't have a player in your collection, you don't get to draft him. That would definitely create some varied teams and make collecting other cards far more important! The only problem is it takes a lot of time to draft a roster.

I like the OP's idea, but it'd just be so hard to judge whether to play certain players or not. Is he going to be totally useless or not? I don't think I'd bother. (I need to watch that movie now though so thanks for sharing!)

bweise's second idea is probably my favourite. If Ozzie Smith isn't in the list of cards, then too bad, you need to pick someone else. And if you really want to tie it into one's collection, the card not only needs to be in the allowed pool, but it also needs to be in your collection. I'd be up for either.

haha it's a fun kung fu movie, takes itself a little too seriously, but there are worse ways to spend an hour and a half
