How Did Brad Wellman Do?

This is the most random post in the history of this forum, I'm quite certain.

I mentioned in another thread that I'm going to start my next franchise/game (after I play awhile longer with the 2033 Royals - maybe until 2040) - and I'm going back to the 1989 Royals with George Brett, Bret Saberhagen, Frank White, Bo Jackson and................... Brad Wellman?

You see, that 1989 team (I was 8 at the time) is what made me fall in love with baseball and the Royals. I have been hooked ever since. So going back to that team will be really special.

I bet I'm the only person on this forum who remembers Brad Wellman - he was my first favorite player. The quote goes, "A boy will never have a hero ever again bigger than his first favorite baseball player." He was mine because he wore my little league number (3), played the same positions (2B/SS) and I liked his name.

I'm strangely excited to go back and have him on my bench as a utility infielder and try to keep him around as long as possible.

So I ask... has anyone simmed recently in that era? How long past 1989 did Brad Wellman last? That was his last year in MLB (he retired at 30 - I've interviewed him in my adult life and found out he just wanted to provide more for his family so just walked away. Straight from MLB to "real life")

Feel free to just completely ignore this post, I'm probably talking out loud, but wanted to share that story with you and see if anyone had quickly accessible stats/info on him.

Oddly enough I was 9 at the time and hated the Royals almost as much as the Cubs.

I'm sure you know why.

I don't remember him but now I have to go back and look because I've done a few historical sims of the mid to late 80's because that's when I loved baseball as a kid and the awesome baby blue uniforms of the Cards and those Pirates stripes. Man what a time.

Awesome!!! In earlier life I hated - I mean HATED the Cardinals. But I’ve grown to respect them with age.

Look forward to hearing what you find!

I was randomly watching (more like listening to as background noise) a Giants-Braves game from 1983 the other night, and the Braves announcers were talking about the fact Wellman shaved his head. He was making league minimum at the time (which was around $35,000 back then, I think), and I think it was Ernie Johnson Sr. who said he did it on a bet (at least that's what I think they said). They showed Wellman on the bench, and even with him wearing a cap, you could see he had recently shaved his head.

What's worse is that I vaguely remember watching that game live back in '83, and the fact he had shaved his head. That's why Brad Wellman's name has always stuck in my head. His career actually lasted longer than I had remembered.

I LOVE the head shaving story. You are 100% correct - he did it on a clubhouse dare.

Here's another random Brad Wellman nugget. His brother in law is Tom Candiotti. He introduced Candiotti to his future wife while they were minor league teammates in Florida.

Angel Salazar > stupid Brad Wellman. Brad Wellman is what you get when a genie grants you three wishes and you wish for Angel Salazar but the genie is pissed off at you because you tried that “I wish for more wishes” garbage on wishes 1 and 2.

Royals fan here...I was 10 in 1989. But like you, I fell in love with baseball when I was 8 in 1987. I started following the Royals on a daily basis that year.

I didn't care one way or the other about the Cardinals growing up, I knew we beat them in 1985, but I didn't like or dislike them. They were just another team.

Until I went to college at Mizzou. My second day in my dorm, I met the guy who lived two doors down, seemed like a good guy, we talked about starting school, we had some mutual interests, and then I mentioned I was from KC. The next thing out of his mouth was "I ****ing hate the Royals."

Allrightythen.

Ironically enough, the way that Cardinal fans hate the Royals, how they look down on them, how they belittle them, it's the same treatment that KU fans give to MU fans. The ironic part is, many Cardinal fans are Mizzou fans, so when I bring up this little ironic nugget, they HATE it. In other words, I didn't care one way or another about the Cardinals until 1997 when I started college. And though I have mellowed with age, their fans, especially those I interacted with during college, made me seriously disdain them for years.

That college story is great. Cardinal fans have a birthright to watch October baseball and losing in October stings.

As a little kid I was heavily influenced by my dad and older brother. I was 5 in 1985 but my brother was 14 and he was my idol and seeing him upset at the Cardinals losing stuck with me for a long time.

For what it's worth I really enjoyed the Royals run a few years ago and think you guys getting Matheny is icing on the cake.
