Do you watch MLB games while playing OOTP?

The real-life MLB season doesn't begin until later this week, but in the meantime I have been playing OOTP19 while watching MLB games from the past. I'm 45 so I grew up in the 1980's and I've been watching games from that time and it's been fun. I haven't seen many of these in a long time. They're from NBC's "Game Of The Week" and ABC's "Monday Night Baseball". Even with the mediocre VHS quality of these archived games, it's still fun to reminisce and watch and see how things have changed.

Obviously, the players back then are noticeably smaller than they are today. I get a kick out of seeing the old commercials back then especially the Miller Lite ones. But most of all, I really like that there were fewer graphics and cutaways like we see so much nowadays. Fox is guilty of this especially during the postseason when they cut to the cast of some Fox TV show that will be cancelled in 3 months.

I say "less is more" and even with all of the modern technology, I think it sometimes takes away from the viewing experience. These old games don't have "pitch-by-pitch" so I don't need to see a 20-pitch at bat where the guy fouled off 12 pitches before finally grounding out to short. Yet despite all of that, I'm still excited and happy to watch the new games of the new season later this week. I'm going to get MLB.tv again and can't wait to start playing along with OOTP. How about you?

I have a share of season tickets to the Marlins so for the 41 home games I attend that's obviously a no for me. But aside from live in person I mostly follow baseball on my SiriusXM radio or via streaming. Ever since I was a kid I've been a big fan of sports on the radio. So when I'm doing that I'm usually doing other things like work, writing, or yes playing OOTP.

The only time I have to sit down and watch TV is usually about 1 hour a night, which is "spend time with the wife" time, so I actually don't get to watch any MLB (I know, it's tragic). But, sometimes depending on the show we're watching, she won't mind me playing OOTP while we watch. There can be an advantage in letting her pick her British Baking Shows!!!

If there is an Orioles game on when I'm playing OOTP, I will almost always turn on the radio and listen to it.

Me too with the Orioles as they are prirority # 1. I will also watch other MLB games. Watching Pirates/Phillies on MLB.TV while playing OOTP19/OOTP18. Also listening to Spotify. I have TuneIn MLB radio broadcast's.

When I was preparing the leagues last week I listened to a 1965 MLB Classic game on YouTube.

Same! I wish we would just move Manny, Jones and Zach like I did in the game. Do it right we can be the Cubs in 5 years

Oh, yeah, I do this all the time during the season. If I'm not watching the Astros, I'm on YouTube watching old NBC or ABC telecasts from the '70s/80s. I usually sim my seasons with the daily Real-Time Simulation feature (at 300 speed) and have the old games on in the background or on my headphones if my wife is watching something on TV.

It's nice to hear I'm not totally insane and that there are other people who enjoy watching games from decades ago on youtube. I like the playoff games NBC would do in the mid to late 90s

Depends on the situation. A lot of times, I'm playing a game while listening to a podcast, or watching something on Netflix, etc. Something very similar to OOTP (like a real live baseball game) playing in the background can throw me off sometimes but YMMV.

I'll sometimes listen to either an old game or the radio if the Pirates are playing and have OOTP on my little surface or computer in the basement. Though I've been noticing recently that I tend to enjoy listening to the TTS announcer that OOTP has more than the actual crew. I've oddly grown to love that robotic voice calling my universe's baseball games.

I started doing this the past couple weekends, mostly watching Cubs games from the 1980s. I'm a longtime Mariners fan but currently live in Chicago so I felt like this was a neat way to get into the history of the local club and occasionally see 80s versions of places I bike past every now and then (yes, I live on the North Side). I guess the players are slightly smaller. The biggest difference I see is that hitters don't call time every other freaking pitch. The numbers say that the games are only around 20 minutes longer today compared to then, and a good 5-10 minutes of that has to be all the pitching changes that occur now, but if nothing else even cutting that other 10-15 minutes off the edges makes it *feel* a lot quicker, the same way that cutting an our of audio down to 50 minutes by eliminating when people say "um" and "ah" or cutting a story down from 15 pages to 14 by eliminating useless exposition. etc. makes it seem tighter.

Yes, absolutely. The Oriole game is either on the radio or on the tv in the background (whichever one Jim Hunter is not calling).
