Playing out games
The last two years I’ve started to play out my games, but I don’t play out pitch by pitch. How much longer would my games be playing out pitch by pitch versus instant like I have been playing? Every year I try to do more things and I know some guys play this way

Simple answer is play out a game and see how long it takes. Figure an average of 4 pitches per plate appearance.. factor in some time for foul balls.. throws to first base etc and it will take quite a lot longer.
I've only thought about playing that way once. I was going to play one game a day..following the Yankees actual schedule during the year. See how my game matched up to what was happening in real life. Then I decided that sounded like a lot of work. |

I play out my games in single pitch. It takes about 20 minutes to play out a game if I don't make a lot of subs. I played a playoff game pitch by pitch a little while ago. it took about an hour.
If it's a big game or an important situation 2 men on two outs down by one, I might with to pitch by pitch. Not for the whole game but for the important situation. It does not improve your chances of a positive outcome but it definitely draws out the tension. And who doesn't love that. OOTP is at it's best when it makes you forget, even for a moment, that it's a computer game. |

I just feel even though it might take longer. I am in more control of my games. Season might take longer, but I learn things in OOTP that I didn't know were there so much it's better to take this game like a women. Slow and easy, not fast

There are also intermediate things you can do. For instance, since most of the important decisions you have to make as a manager come late in the game one thing I and a lot of other OOTPers do / have done in the past is sim to the 7th inning and then take over. You still get to handle relief pitching and pinch-hitters, if the game's a blowout you can just sim through anyway, and IME it's one of those things that really, really helps you get immersed into a fictional league.

With the amazing improvements to 3D play (esp the player icons), I'm having crazy, awesome flashbacks to my Micro League Baseball days as a kid. I remember hours and hours of watching those little player sprites and loving every minute of it. Obviously, OOTP's graphics far surpass those (and I don't have to tally season stats by hand). I see myself playing out many more games this year than in the past.

Yes! And those ridiculous rainbow throws from deep in the outfield to cut down a runner at the plate who had already slid in safely. Oh, how times have changed.

I play out all games, typically playing manager-only.
The issue you will likely have with doing pitch by pitch is sheer boredom after a while. I don’t know a number, but maybe 60% of pitches (IRL and in OOTP), nothing happens. Kershaw throws the ball, some guy catches the ball. IRL, there is an art to that. I could watch Kershaw throw a curve or slider on TV all day long. Ditto Rivera’s cutter, or just watch Maddux paint corners at 89mph. It’s fun. In OOTP, there is none of that, and can’t be. I enjoy the strategy of the game pitch by pitch, so tend to go one pitch until there is a reason not to, like a batter is at the plate where strategy might matter (I might pitch around Trout at 3-1 more than your average player, but don’t want to necessarily pitch around the entire at-bat), when a speedy runner gets on-base for the other team (in OOTP, you pay a huge price for hold runner in one pitch mode, so maybe I only hold at 0-0 and 2-0, but not at 0-2), and then as others have said, from the 7th on (could be 6th on, or just 9th - not much need to slow play it ina 14-2 game in May). One pitch will keep you much more interested, and then use PxP when it’s intriguing to do so. Just my two cents. |

For me...I play 80% pitch by pitch. For me that is real baseball not just getting the final results. I enjoy printing out key game boxscores and game logs and take note of key at bats with pitch counts etc.
And for me it doesn't matter how many games I get in...it just matters how the game I'm playing is doing. I just really enjoy the game I'm playing at the time. Fun with baseball...one game at a time. But the biggest part of my OOTP play is World Series and great history two team replays. But of course, this year...I'll be enjoying the new tournament mode!! I like to play through the real life current season but just have too much trouble updating rosters etc as the year goes by. OOTP19...ain't it grand...

Totally can see that, but I kind of look at the pitch location screen to take my eyes off of the play-by-play which makes it a little more fun. Plus when I win I get satisfaction of making the right decisions which more times than not one decision I made killed me and that’s OK because I know I made it. CPU AI is so much better that you can’t screw up too much |

It seems as if a majority on here get their kicks from simming seasons and building an organization. Like you, my enjoyment is the tactical of one game at a time, then figuring how I used the bullpen last night affects today’s game, how many games in a row for your star before rest is beneficial (I aim to never get the warning that a player is tired), etc. |
