OOTP5 Leauge...with PRIZES
I was thinking about starting a ootp5 leauge..with real players and in order to get your team..you pay for it. I was thinking around 5 dollars per team and you get cash prizes for special things..like having a MVP, World Series Winner, ROY, etc. Anyway there would be a draft..otherwise if you wanted teams like the Yankee's you'd have to pay more then the rest. IF your intrested email me at mets01rule@aol.com
Also, if someone wants to help me out..be a co-commish that'd be cool Thanks

I'm not positive about how this works, but doing a league that involves payment and reward, there might be certain tax issues to deal with. Even if you aren't making a profit, you might still have to deal with business laws, etc. Just something to think about.
There might be a couple of leagues like this out there, Maybe one of those commishes could enlighten us? Last edited by JML; 03-08-2003 at 02:09 PM. |

It's actually interesting to me, because I've had fleeting ideas about starting a league where you pay a fee, and the commish actually does make a profit. The idea being that the league would have to be good enough to warrant people paying to join it. Last edited by JML; 03-08-2003 at 02:58 PM. |

if you bet on a football game with someone at work does the taxman jump out of a bush and accost you? i'd think it was a ridiculously tiny non-issue.

I wouldn't worry. IRS is too busy seeing where they can make more money like with "Let's tax the guy who caught so and so's 500th homerun". Its small enough where I don't think its something one would have to worry about. Also I've considered this kind of league myself and would like one to pop up.

And I'm not sure if "ridiculously tiny non-issue" is in the IRS's vocabulary.

In fantasy leagues etc. where you play with a bunch of friends and co-workers it is cool to have a cash entry and prizes. Kinda like the NCAA pool most of us will be in soon.
When having a league with all players strangers (some strange too), then you have more complications. Guys may get pissed off at the results and accuse the commish of cheating etc. When money gets involved, the rules change. Just my .02

This is why i'd let people get some of there money back, and they'd never be allowed back in the leauge.

Technically, upon making a private sale (i. e. selling your old CD to a friend), you owe the government tax. But no one bothers with this unless it's a very large sale made through official channels. As it is, of course, total bull.
Taxation isn't moral or ethical, in any way. We have very little choice over where tax money is spent. Not to mention how wrong it is that the govenment collects tax on used merchandise, or so forth.

"Social Contract: An agreement among the members of an organized society or between the governed and the government defining and limiting the rights and duties of each." And if ethics are "the rules or standards governing the conduct of a person", then I would think of taxation as one of the rules of society. Do I agree with what is taxed and how the revenue is used? No. But I do think that it is ethical, and more importantly, necessary for a productive society to exist.

kq, I'm glad you replied to this silly statement.
Without some form of taxation, there is complete anarchy. No taxation = no government. As for a money-making league, I just think it would lead to really bad feelings. Plus, think of the potential to attract cheating owners.... Once you add money into the mix, there's so many things to fight over. I think this is a bad idea, although if you've got people willing to try it, I say good luck to you.... And I wouldn't worry too much about tax consequences. It is technically illegal, but I'd guess it wouldn't be any more likely to attract official attention than March Madness stuff.
