Multiple Shortlists - best thing since . . .

I forget whether it was OOTPB 16 or previous to that when multiple shortlists were introduced.

One shortlist was limited in usefulness, a sort of grab bag that needed to be sorted through when visited. "Why did I shortlist this guy?" Multiple shortlists introduced much greater utility in that they allowed topicality.

For example, I have used these shortlists:
  • Developing Young Players (for important prospects)
  • Free Agent Targets (players that I have my eyes on)
  • Hall of Fame Consideration (tracking HoF careers)
  • Future Coaches (players with high leadership, loyalty, intelligence, and work ethic to convert to coaches when they retire)
  • Top Players (non-relievers with overall ratings of 75 or higher, used in conjunction with News Involving Shortlisted Players to filter out articles about non-important players)
  • Yankees to Remember (for nostalgia)
Multiple shortlists add considerable value to this game.

I sometimes have oddball shortlists like "Two-Way Players" (hint hint) to keep them straight.

Yes, so many uses. Some I have that are not on your list

1. MLB #1 overall draft picks (cool to bring up and see where they all are)

2. Players I traded away

3. Players I traded for

I see new feature ideas with this. In the past I only thought of shortlists as something we'd have to select, but your lists could be done automatically by the computer!

Comparable to what you'd call an auto playlist on a music player.

The last two (maybe combined in one shortlist) are a good idea. Many times, you want to go back and see how your trades have come out.

Going back to my OP, I included this as a shortlist example:
  • Top Players (non-relievers with overall ratings of 75 or higher, used in conjunction with News Involving Shortlisted Players to filter out articles about non-important players)
Now, you may be saying, well, you will also get news, then, about your Developing Young Players, Free Agent Targets, HoF Candidates, etc. Yes, but that's all to the good. I find that it helps my immersion to focus on the important players in the game and those that I have an interest in. Sort of like IRL in that, do you follow the seasons, careers, injuries, trades, and transactions of more than, say, 10% of players not on your favorite team?

i use the default one for anytime i do something in bulk. this list is a temporary working / staging area. e.g. prospects for draft are added to it, then more easily compared on the shortlist screen.

Watch List
if i don't select a player that i deem significant for any reason, i add them to a "Watch List." i expand this list by perusing the minors on occasion too (once per year or two).

I have a "To Trade" list, which is just players that aren't part of my plans. These are the only capitalized players in my organization. that makes it easy to find them on the trade screeen.

i have on occasion used it to track a player, like some of the uses above, just on a smaller scale - like 1 player, not all that i have traded for.

in reference to kq76, i'd love to have more of a scripting language available... we'd be able automate the lists in a very open-ended way.

Yes, that's a good point about the default list. I will throw somebody in there just to keep an eye on him for a short while, but what it really comes in handy is for maintaining the shortlists themselves.

Say you want to rearrange the order of the shortlists. Temporarily assign all members of a certain shortlist into the default shortlist, delete the certain shortlist, recreate it, and move the players back into it. The newest shortlist always appears on the bottom of the list (or top, one or the other - I cannot recall right now).

Good observation. Refresh my memory. Can you rename a shortlist, or would you rely on this operation to assist that change as well?

One thing I don't like however, is anytime you create a note on a payer, it automatically adds them to the default shortlist...which is fine, but when I rid of the note, I don't think it takes the player off the shortlist, leaving my to say "why is this player on my shortlist"?

I don't see anyway to rename a shortlist, but doing that temporary shuffle with the default shortlist, it's easy enough to delete and create shortlists until you have them named and arranged the way you want them. I checked, by the way; new shortlists are added to the bottom of the list.

What would really be spectacular is if we could color code our shortlists!

I like the way FM implements shortlists and notes. It's worth a look for anyone who cares to check it out. Really, the entire UI in FM is off the charts!

I've always used the shortlist ALOT but it really helps being able to divide them up. I shortlist every player thats ever been on the major league squad (seriously, I want to know how their careers are going). I have a shortlist now to keep track of free agent targets throughout the year. I shortlist guys in the draftpool who I want to keep my eye on. I also have a special shortlist for guys who I was torn on whether or not to draft but passed in favor of somebody else, so I can see in the future whether or not my decision paid off.

The joy of the OOTP universe is that you can make it so large, but obviously this can be a hindrance at certain stages of the game. Not only are those more manageable now, but it makes exploring and immersing yourself in your OOTP world a lot more fun.

I usually only have 2 shortlists that I use. Former players, which are players I cut which I drafted or had spent significant time in my org, and complex releases which are the discoveries and IFA that I released. I like to see if they ever caught on somewhere

You need more shortlists!

Not meaning to beat a dead horse, but the shortlist of Top Players (non-relievers with overall ratings of 75 or higher, used in conjunction with News Involving Shortlisted Players to filter out articles about non-important players) is probably the most important one that I maintain. I really think that one lends to greater immersion in that you focus on the players who matter, just like IRL.

I find it inscrutable. That's always been the difference between FM and OOTP.

Or miss a diamond in the rough. Important to have another means or routine to glean those outstanding performances at lower levels (and by players of relative non-importance) just to see if they were a flash in the pan or a sign of things to come.

FWIW, I 'try' monthly to look at the Explore the World news. Just wish I could sort it by level, but it still works all right for the purpose of quick review to cover those gaps. Still like Bru's concept, though. Hits the high marks of the weekly/monthly news with the spotlight on stars.

Darn it, Rch. Haven't had to this for quite awhile:

in·scru·ta·ble
inˈskro͞odəb(ə)l/
adjective
impossible to understand or interpret.
"Guy looked blankly inscrutable"
synonyms: enigmatic, mysterious, unreadable, inexplicable, unexplainable, incomprehensible, impenetrable, unfathomable, unknowable;
