Fire The Manager Or The Superstar?
So, how do you guys handle a situation like this? I started a 2016 game with the Padres and somehow managed to get rid of all the dead weight on the team. Kemp, Ramirez, Upton, Shields, Cashner, etc.
In 2016 I also hired a new manager, Oliver Atteridge from Australia. I know it's bold and risky to hire a manager from down under with no MLB experience, but I liked what this guy had to offer. We went 72-90 in 2016 with our depleted roster, and I went into 2017 with all the faith in the world in Oliver. Thank god I did, as we're vastly exceeding expectations and at the beginning of July we hold a 46-38 record, good for 3rd place in the new, 8 team NL West, a half game out of the final wildcard spot. Here is where my dilemma lies. Wil Myers has turned into one of the best young players the game has to offer. 25 HR's by July 5th, while being on pace for 48 HR's and 129 RIbbies is pretty good. I wanted to avoid arbitration and get him locked up to a long term deal to be the face of my franchise going forward, but he refuses to resign as long as my current manager is on board. What would you guys do? Stick with your guy? Or give into the selfish young superstar and fire your manager who's performing well above expectations? |

I like to do what I think I'd do in real life. I know it might sound crazy in this day and age, but if I like the job my manager is doing, I'm keeping him and trading the malcontent. If too many players have an issue with the manager, though, then I have to consider getting rid of him as obviously the players are tuning him out. It sounds like you like the job your manager is doing and Myers is the only who has a problem with him.

Unless other players have a problem with your manager then I'd trade him. His report says he is a selfish player, so who's to say he's not going to like the next manager either? Also you might get more for him than down the line as perhaps this is just a flash in the pan year, probably not, but it could be.
Another thing to consider too is that if you fire your manager and hire a new one then other players may not like the new manager and you could end up with more problems. |

Trade the little schitt, and give him a nickname from the hometown fans that;; stick with him forever - like "Oliver's Lackey"

Thanks guys. As much as it pains me, I'll probably end up trading him at the deadline next season depending on our record.

Make sure the manager doesn't also have issues with half the team, but otherwise I'd definitely can Myers instead of Atteridge.
I mean, I doubt you're where you are purely because of Myers and it's not as if he plays in an irreplaceable position. If he was doing that at third base or shortstop it might be more difficult to decide, but a 1B? Pffft. |

Looking at my manager though, he seems to not get along with most of my veterans (Although Myers is the only one unwilling to resign, and isn't really a "veteran". But, this could develop into a problem in the next few years if the vets on my team don't get along with my manager. Another dilemma arises. |

Since this thread has brought it up, does anyone have any idea why a manager has a good relationship with one player and not another.
Example. I was thinking of changing managers, as they had problems with a few players (not problem personality type people). So I went into available managers and checked a few. All would have poor relationships with most of the same players. Not one manager could have a good relationship with them. So I am a bit stumped...any ideas what the secret behind it might be...if I want a manager who is liked by a few guys what it is one is looking for relationship wise... |

I would sh*tcan the manager. Unless the guy's a tactical uber-genius, you can always replace him with some other cabbage head. Young superstars, however, are NOT so easy to replace.

Trade the malcontent & send the very important message to your team that like him or not, the MANAGER is in charge of the team, not an entitled, whiny player no matter how good he is. You don't have to like him, but you will respect him. ( With a nod to Tony Soprano. Not the same quote, but close.)
