MLB All-Star Game (No Gwynn tribute)
So MLB can continue the Jeter love fest (most overrated shortstop ever, yeah I said it), but can't take a few minutes for a Tony Gwynn tribute. Ridiculous.
Thoughts?

Don't have time to check into this; when was the last time an All-Star starter had a slugging % lower than their OBP like Jeter this year?

As for Gwynn, yes, you're right. How did he not merit a tribute is beyond me. |

My understanding was that Gwynn's widow was not up to going to the ASG. This was just on the radio here. If that is the case I completely understand not having something. I suspect there might be a tribute at the WS. This would be fitting as Tony appeared in the 1984 WS.
If that is the plan then I see no reason to be critical of MLB at this time.

Last night was about Jeter, no reason to bring the mood down with cancer. Come WS time, unless Jeter is in it, I imagine Gwynn will be honored appropriately. |

"Stand Up for Cancer." Didn't MLB make that their cause last night?

Holy Cow! Did you see that? I thought he was talking about me! Yours Truly, Scooter Rizzuto (P.S. Rizzuto's CAREER SLG is barely higher than his OBP) Last edited by TribeFanInNC; 07-16-2014 at 02:34 PM. |

Giving Gwynn the honor he deserves means setting a completely different tone for the night, which wouldn't be conducive for honoring Jeter. I'm going to reserve my judgement until after the season. If they don't do anything during the playoffs/WS. Then I'll express my disappointment. |

Not to mention it would've been a perfect time to acknowledge the loss of Tony Gwynn. (But what do I know?)

No, it was not.
Last night was about 60-odd players, 50% of which came from either league, who were playing a ballgame with a few million people watching, to decide home field advantage for the World Series. From what I heard, it turned into a slimy Jeter affair, but last time I checked it was not initially billed the Derek Jeter We Love You So Much We Never Want You To Leave Game.

OK I get it. Gwynn should have been honored. I'll wait to see what the Gwynne family's wishes were before judging the level of the screw up.
Using someone else's screw up to justify pissy little hate fits on to Jeter just doesn't fly. I'm no Jeter worshipper but he is not responsible for anything that did or did not happen last night.

I agree that it probably had little impact. I mean, who doesn't know about cancer and its devastating effects? So, then what? It's PR for the league. They want you to believe that a league full of millionaires has a social conscience. The NFL does it, too. Mere posturing? Who knows?

They pretty much did the same thing in Cal Ripken's last all-star game 2001. He was even grooved a pitch that he took deep. Although Gywnn was present and given an award (along with Ripken) he did not make the all-star team his last year. Over-shadowed again by a shortstop it seems.
