Retirement
From my experience, older free agents always retire after exactly two years of not being signed. It's not realistic that every single one of them retires after the exact same amount of time without a contract. Has anyone else noticed this?

In another thread Markus stated that is by design that they retire after 2 years of sitting as a FA. I have no problem with it.

Why would they design something to be unrealistic? Do players still retire while they're under contract? I don't think I've seen it since earlier versions.

Why do you feel it is unrealistic? Jermaine Dye went unsigned for 2 years and announced his retirement. Do you want players like Barry Bonds after not playing for 7 yrs finally says he retires? I have 2800 FA, I wish they would retire sooner. Yes players retire while under contract although it is rare. I have a 39 yr old C I have unretired twice.

I think there should be some variance in how long it takes for FAs to retire, based on things like Greed (higher Greed means they're likely to hang on for one last payday a bit longer).

Let R=765 days (2 yrs)
Let A=Rand(-765 to +765) Let W=ROUND(work ethic, 5,0) Let A(A)=(A+1.05)/A Let R(R)=[(R+A)*(A(A))] Let Z=R(R)+[(R(R)/(W))] Where Z is the number of days from first free-agency to when the player will actually retire. ![]() I think I have that formula right.

It's just a way of clearing out the free agent lists. Much easier to program everyone for a certain set time rather than variable times. It's really no big deal either way though imo. Irl if a player doesn't sign with anyone in two years 99.5% of the time he's essentially retired, whether it's been announced or not. Few to no guys will come back after that long away from the game.

I also see a list of players, both majors and minors who retire every year. No 2 year wait, it happens after the WS.

It's a programming thing. It's infinitely simpler to just program the game to know that 2 Free Agent years = retirement than to create an algorithm that causes a realistic number to retire after 2, and 3, and 4, and 5 years. And it's something that, if they DID write the algorithm for, no one would notice. Too much work, too little payoff.
It just doesn't seem like a big deal to me - out of all the minor immersion-breakers in OOTP, this seems to be by far one of the most minute. |

Along similar lines, OOTP has an abnormal number of players age 38-40 that think they can keep playing until their arm falls off. I have seen at least a half dozen times former All Star starters and relievers asking for 5-6 year contracts at age 39 for huge sums of money. It's making it impossible to sign any of my veterans.

Why? Surely you don't want to sign them for sentimental reasons.

I remember when the game would radomly UNRETIRE a player. Then the teeth griting news blub of "...RETIRES FROM RETIREMENT" appear!
(Will that ever be corrected to maybe "...returns from retirement"? How about the option of offering a retired guy enough money that he agrees to come back from retirement? (if young/talented/able enough? JP
