Thumbs down Career ending concussion?

So Brendan Ryan gets injured, and the diagnosis says that his concussion will end his career. Now I know concussions can be bad, but I doubt it by itself could end a career. Neck injuries from it make sense, but this seems lame.

Justin Morneau and Brian Roberts are both currently struggling to ever be the same or get back to some type of normal as of right now.

Well, I say this without knowing all the details of the scenario in your game, but concussions canenda career if a player has had many of them. Though it's pretty rare in baseball because players don't often suffer multiple concussions.

Ray Chapman for the obvious example. Also Mickey Cochrane. Dickie Thon also had his career severely derailed by a concussion, although he did come back eventually. Tony Conigliaro is another guy who suffered a really, really horrible head injury which could have ended his career but didn't.

by all accounts, Justin Morneaus career looks over. Concussions are the worst injury in sports (outside of severe neck injuries that can paralyse the player), so what you describe here makes perfect sense.

Corey Koskie's career was ended by a concussion he suffered like 3 years before he actually retired.

Man you guys are bringing up names I haven't heard in years! Justin Morneau's career is done. Sucks. So yes concussions will end a career.

This video shows the Koskie concussion at the 1:15 mark. It doesn't even look that bad, but it effectively ended his career.

I am pretty sure the Brendan Ryan's career was over before the concussions.

um, what? He is having neck surgery for a pinched nerve. He has been symptom free from his concussion for quite a while. Now, he was struggling, but pretty sure his career is nowhere near over.

There are many players that we will never know that may have had careers cut off or shortened due to concussion. Aaron Hill of the Blue Jays had a monster season after a concussion but has never looked anything close to the player he seemed to be in the last two seasons.

Matheny's case is a little different than many in that it was a cumulative effect of repeated minor concussions. Morneau's seems to occupy the other extreme as it was a very bad concussion from what seemed to be a medium impact. I've watched the Morneau replay a lot and it just doesn't look like a big impact.

He is still injured, but I thought it was something with his legs this time. Then just heard he was going to have wrist surgery so he will stay on the DL, even though there were whispers during the winter meetings that he was still suffering from the concussion, so who knows what is going on with him.

As a Sox fan, I am in no hurry to see him back on the field.
