How do you play OOTP?

I've seen a few posts on the boards recently about whether OOTP should focus on historical, fictional, or modern gameplay as the franchise moves forward. Personally, I think that OOTP is one of the strongest titles in all three markets and I hope this continues into the future. Nevertheless, I am curious to know how others on this board play.

I probably should have included an "online" option. I am assuming that most online players are in fictional leagues, but I suppose that some people must play historical/real online as well.

almost always fictional. this game replaced my need for dice, cards, and number generators awhile back and has saved at least a forest worth of trees that I would have used writing stuff down the old fashioned way.

it also replaced my old cadaco all star discs when I wanted historical simulations.

Historical. I usually begin in the early 80's and play through. Once I get to about 2020 when all of the players I know have retired, I start over.

Historical and sometimes modern day. Can't stand fictional.

Well I like the real modern MLB.

Why would anyone like to play fictional? Names don't mean nothing in that type of game play. What's the fun in that?

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

Unless you play historical you get to a fictional league pretty quickly anyway. I personally would rather draft a name that means nothing to me and watch him be the next Hank Aaron then see the "real" Hank Aaron never break a HR record or even worse get a CEI his first season. I just hate it when really good real players I like perform less than they do in real life.

Sure it is cool if Jeff Bagwell were to lead the league in HRs a season or get 2 MVPs instead of one but it doesn't make up for something like the hand injury in '94 possibly being a CEI or enough to ruin his ratings for ever if you don't recalc. I really hate it when a pitcher I like Cy Young season ends with an injury in June or if Hudek stinks his rookie year instead of all years but his rookie year. I would much rather follow a player I have no expectations for other than what my scout says and watch him rise to power than to see a great real player retire early or perform subpar. If your top draft pick never pans out it is not as big of a deal because he is just some overrated guy. If Nolan Ryan does not pan out or gets a CEI that makes me want to pull my hair out.

That is why I play fictional.

I voted other because I've only played a handful of leagues and they were always different.

First one was fictional players with a combination of real and fictional teams, set in modern times and played on OOTP6. 32 teams in 8 divisions, no wildcards. So three rounds of playoffs. Lasted about eight years and I remember the Blue Jays made the post-season every season save for one but never won the World Series. Their streak included three straight 100+ win seasons.

Second one was fictional players with a combination of real and fictional teams set in the '50s, also played on OOTP6. I did a dynasty thread for it but went into too much detail and got burnt out before reaching the ASB of the first season, although I did sim the rest of the season and the Padres ended up winning.

Next one was historical, starting in '58 with the premise that the Dodgers stayed in Brooklyn, played on OOTP6.5. I did a dynasty thread for that one which lasted a couple of seasons and was very enjoyable before, once again, burnout struck. The Braves repeated as champs in '58, once again beating the Yankees and then, amazingly, the Cubs beat Cleveland in '59. I simmed a number of seasons after that without chronicling it in the dynasty thread and the Yankees and Cubs made a number of appearances in the WS through the '60s.

After that there was a modern one started in 1990 with real teams and players, with forum members also included as fictional players. I was running it in the dynasty threads and off topic forum and got through a couple of seasons before giving it away.

I am currently working on one that will be fictional teams but real players, starting in 1901. My plan is to attempt to make certain teams successful by giving them high draft picks each year and also making them more financially powerful than the others, in order to simulate them being the Yankees of the early days.

I play a combination of Real and Fictional. In my current Dynasty MLB is accurate thru 1998, and although I messed up and forgot to turn the Ammy draft off players go to their orig teams. And in a few hrs I will start my fictional EBL from scratch on OOTP to see how it would play out knowing what I now now about baseball vs when I was 12.

The poll answers were a bit ambiguous. I chose "real," because I play with real MLB set ups, but with fictional players.

Someone asked: "Why fictional?" I can answer for myself, that I like to have the personalities of the players in my head. I also like to create myself, my twin, my best friend, and his best friend as players at the age of 18, give each of us extremely high potential, but 1s all across the board for current ratings. I like to see us develop, how long it takes to develop, and whether or not any of us reach our potential.

I play all them, but mostly fictional. Lately I've been playing a universe style with Korean, Japan, Mexico, and completely fictional australian and south american leagues. I use real MLB rosters that come with the game. It's pretty cool to see guys that would ride the pine in the MLB end up in Australia or some othe league and be productive.

When I do historical I usually only play the periods I like and sim the rest. I'm a big fan of the 50's and 60's as well as the 80's.
